Headline: Everton Seeks to Strengthen Attack Ahead of January Transfer Window
Everton’s difficulty in scoring has heightened the urgency for manager David Moyes to bolster his attacking options as the winter transfer window looms. Currently, the Toffees find themselves in a challenging position, having netted just eight goals while conceding nine in their first eight Premier League matches, which has resulted in 10 points from two victories, four draws, and two defeats. Thierno Barry, the team’s leading scorer with three goals, underscores the club’s heavy reliance on their primary centre-forward.
The recent summer exits of Iliman Ndiaye to Manchester City for £60 million and Beto for £15 million have significantly reduced the attacking options available to Moyes. As a result, Barry has taken on a substantial share of the central-striker responsibilities, while academy product Braiden Graham has limited top-level experience. Although Brennan Johnson can fill various attacking roles, the squad still lacks a reliable alternative at the number nine position.
This pressing need has compelled Everton to seek another centre-forward, with Dinamo Zagreb emerging as a potential target. According to reports from Sport Witness, citing the Croatian newspaper Večernji List, Everton may approach Dinamo regarding 24-year-old striker Dion Drena Beljo in January. Reports indicate that Newcastle United is also vying for his acquisition, introducing competition for Moyes.
Beljo has made a significant impact this season, scoring 17 goals and providing eight assists across 17 matches. Dinamo Zagreb reportedly rejected two offers last summer, both around £17 million, while their current asking price stands at approximately £21 million. With Beljo’s contract in place until 2030, the Croatian club has little incentive to accept a lower bid. Known for his ability to win aerial duels, hold possession, and support wide players, Beljo’s profile fits a need for Everton.
Should Everton take the financial risk on Beljo?

Beljo’s impressive scoring record explains Moyes’ interest, and his physical attributes could provide Everton with a fresh attacking dimension. The addition of another centre-forward would alleviate some of the pressure on Barry and offer different strategies against teams that congest the final third. However, committing £21 million entails a serious financial decision, particularly amid uncertainties surrounding The Friedkin Group’s planned sale and its implications for Everton’s finances.
Beljo’s agency, Roof, also represents Barry and Tyler Dibling, which may facilitate discussions during the negotiation process. Nevertheless, this existing relationship should aid rather than dictate Everton’s recruitment direction.
Before proceeding with a bid, Everton must weigh the factors of wages, adaptation to English football, and overall costs. If Dinamo insists on a premium, Moyes should navigate negotiations carefully, ensuring that the pressing need for striker depth does not compromise the club’s financial prudence.
