Xabi Alonso Faces First Chelsea Crisis Amid Unthinkable Turn of Events

Xabi Alonso Faces Tough Decisions on Playing Time for Estevao at Chelsea

Returning to Anfield brought back memories for Xabi Alonso, stirring echoes from the mid-2000s when fierce rivalries defined the Premier League. Reminiscent of the tactical battles between Jose Mourinho and Rafa Benitez, Alonso now faces challenges similar to those he encountered at Real Madrid, specifically regarding player management.

Alonso’s current predicament involves Brazilian talent Estevao, who has found himself sidelined during pivotal matches. Just as Brazilian prodigies like Endrick and Vinicius Junior faced scrutiny at Real Madrid, Estevao sits on the bench at Stamford Bridge. “I understand his situation and that he could be happier, for sure,” Alonso shared. “Every player wants to play, wants to be part of the team,” he acknowledged, highlighting Estevao’s frustration.

Estevao did not make an appearance as Chelsea fell to Liverpool on Wednesday. His total playing time in the Premier League stands at only 47 minutes. He participated briefly against Tottenham after limited appearances of seven, nine, four, three, and six minutes in previous outings.

“We know that the season is going to be long, and there will be moments for everyone,” Alonso commented. However, Chelsea’s lack of European commitments limits the time for the inclusion of younger players.

Alonso appeared to overlook opportunities to give Estevao more playtime, notably when Joao Pedro was injured, opting instead for a striker-less formation. This decision contributed to Chelsea’s uninspired performance against Spurs. In contrast, other managers, such as Andoni Iraola, have successfully integrated younger players into competitive situations.

When discussing his decisions, Alonso noted, “We have started with Pedro [Neto], with Danny [Welbeck] and with Morgan [Rogers] up front.” He also pointed out that several substitutions were due to unforeseen issues with players like Maxence Lacroix and Moises Caicedo. Estevao missed opportunities for minutes despite being available.

Looking at the broader context, a consistent pattern has emerged over the past two-and-a-half months. Various factors influence this, including the signing of Rogers, who has been in strong form, and Alonso’s preferred formation that tends to omit wingers. Estevao, despite his talent, is thus forced to wait.

Estevao’s potential first captured attention last season when he scored several key goals, including a memorable one against Liverpool, showcasing the flair that endeared him to fans. A year ago, Alonso’s management of young talents was under scrutiny, yet Estevao emerged as a rising star.

Alonso justifies holding Estevao back by citing the intense nature of English football. “The game in England is really intense,” he stated. “You need to be up for it. Este has played, for sure, it’s his second season. But he had the injury and he’s in that process. Trust me, Este is going to play his role,” he reassured.

If Alonso’s claim is valid, the timing and context of Estevao’s involvement will be crucial. Reports suggest Estevao is considering a move in January due to his lack of game time, which parallels Endrick’s temporary departure last year. However, Chelsea may hesitate to let Estevao go, given their ambitions for the current season.

Supporters will certainly be watching closely. Since the arrival of Clearlake Capital, Chelsea has seen numerous players come and go, many with minimal impact when leaving. Yet among the club’s young acquisitions, Estevao is viewed as having the potential to emerge as a standout talent reminiscent of stars like Palmer, Eden Hazard, and Arjen Robben.

Presently, Estevao finds himself on the periphery, and with Chelsea scheduled for only one midweek fixture before the Christmas break, his situation may not improve soon. “I’m sure that Este will have his moment,” Alonso asserted. However, the timing, the team dynamics, and the colors he will wear when that moment arrives remain uncertain.
