Aston Villa Star Reveals Real Madrid Interest in 2021 and Reasons Behind Transfer Failure

Pau Torres Reflects on Missed Opportunity with Real Madrid

Real Madrid has consistently pursued both star players and promising talents. They have overlooked several potential defensive recruits throughout their history, including Aston Villa centre-back Pau Torres, who recently discussed how he could have joined the Bernabeu.

The Spanish international garnered interest from Los Blancos in 2021 when he played for Villarreal, but the club opted for different options at the time.

In an interview with Diario AS, Torres confirmed he was considered one of the candidates for a move to Real Madrid that summer.

Ultimately, Los Blancos chose David Alaba, who was available as a free agent after leaving Bayern Munich.

“Yes, ultimately being among the two or three candidates for a team like Real Madrid is always something very positive,” Torres shared.

“I also understand why they decided at the end of the transfer window to go for a free agent like David Alaba,” he reflected.

“He was a more established player than me, with more experience,” added the defender, noting the timing during which Madrid was transitioning to a new defensive setup, with Sergio Ramos leaving and Raphael Varane moving to Manchester United.

At that time, Torres, then 24, had established himself as one of the top centre-backs in La Liga, making him a long-term contender for Madrid’s defense.

Why Real Madrid’s decision made sense

Ultimately, Alaba’s availability as a free transfer proved more attractive to Real Madrid.

While Madrid’s decision appeared sound at that moment, it did not yield the expected outcomes. Alaba sustained an ACL injury early in his stint with the club, and after returning, he struggled to regain his peak form.

The Austrian departed the club after the last season, while Pau Torres has emerged as a dependable defender at Aston Villa.

This situation serves as a reminder of a missed opportunity, reflecting on the ‘what could have been’ narrative for fans.
