Declan Rice has discussed how Mikel Arteta inspired Arsenal with a reminder of their historic struggles at Anfield prior to their recent 1-0 victory over Liverpool.

Kai Havertz secured the lone goal of the match in the 16th minute, finishing at the far post after Rice’s low cross skated through the Liverpool defense.

This victory marked Arsenal’s first Premier League win at Anfield since September 2012, placing them five points ahead of Brighton at the top of the table, and leaving them nine points clear of Liverpool.

For Rice, the achievement transcended mere statistics.

“Coming to Anfield, the record here speaks volumes – first win in 14 years – so to secure a 1-0 victory today, showcasing our togetherness and resilience, is incredible,” he stated

“I’m thrilled to achieve the win and three valuable points,” he continued. “The manager emphasized our target, recalling previous wins at Spurs and Chelsea, the last significant away wins, and Liverpool was the longest outstanding of them all.” He noted, “The manager instilled in us the mindset required to come here and win, demonstrating our unity.”

Rice added, “The togetherness is unparalleled. I’ve never been part of a team that shares this kind of bond. It’s remarkable how happy everyone is to come in, work together, and represent the club.”

Arteta urged his players prior to the match to seize a victory that had eluded the club for 14 years. They accomplished this by capitalizing on an early opportunity and defending their advantage throughout the game.

Although Liverpool created several chances before halftime, including a close call when Florian Wirtz hit the crossbar from a free-kick (which goalie Raya had covered), their attempts were largely blunted as they failed to hit the target.

There was also a debatable moment concerning Jurrien Timber, who appeared to pull Alexander Isak‘s shirt in the box, but no penalty was awarded.

Despite significant discussions in the UK media over that incident, the two rough tackles from Trey Nyoni within the first ten minutes have drawn little attention, although they arguably warranted a red card.

Liverpool ended the match without a single shot on target, marking the first occurrence of this in Premier League history at Anfield. Ironically, they had also failed to hit the target during their last game at the Emirates in January.

After the halftime break, Christos Tzolis had an opportunity to extend Arsenal’s lead but was denied by a strong save from Alisson, marking his return from a month-long absence due to a hamstring issue.

Ultimately, Havertz’s goal stood as the decisive factor.

This victory not only marked Arsenal’s 300th away win in the Premier League, but it also moved Havertz to 46 career goals in the competition, surpassing Ilkay Gündogan as the highest-scoring German player in the league.

More importantly for Arteta and his squad, they have successfully broken through a long-standing barrier with this win.
