Paulo Fonseca Announces Departure from Olympique Lyonnais
Olympique Lyonnais manager Paulo Fonseca has reportedly informed his players of his decision to leave the Rhône-based club this morning, according to RMC Sport.
Jorge Maciel, Fonseca’s assistant manager, is set to take interim charge for the upcoming Europa League match against Real Sociedad next Thursday. His involvement in Sunday’s away match at Brest will depend on whether a new head coach is appointed before the winter break.

Carlos Vicens, the former SC Braga manager and Pep Guardiola’s assistant at Manchester City, is currently the leading candidate to replace Fonseca at the club.
Fonseca joined Lyon in January 2025, and with his contract set to expire next June, he is likely to join Sporting CP, the club he supports. Sporting parted ways with their manager Rui Borges last night. This transition was anticipated, as Fonseca had previously indicated a “possibility” of leaving following Les Gones‘ 2-0 victory over Angers SCO.
