Willem II Faces Relegation Threat After Disastrous Start in Eredivisie
Willem II finds itself in serious jeopardy of repeating its past as a yo-yo club in Dutch football. The team returned to the Eredivisie this summer, a mere year after being relegated from the top division. Unfortunately, their comeback has been anything but triumphant. Willem II previously spent eight consecutive seasons in the Eredivisie until their relegation at the close of the 2022 season. Currently, they appear to be joining the ranks of clubs frequently oscillating between the Eredivisie and the second tier.
With a bleak record of 11 matches into the season, Willem II remains the sole team in the Eredivisie without a victory. They have managed to collect only two points and have suffered through nine losses. Their defensive woes are even more concerning, having already conceded an astounding 39 goals, which results in a goal difference of -29. They sit seven points behind Telstar, who is perched in 16th place, indicating a slim opportunity for redemption through the playoffs. The gap is widening, with a daunting nine points separating them from Excelsior and safety.
This past weekend, Willem II’s struggles continued as they were on the receiving end of another heavy defeat, this time at the hands of PSV. Their previous match saw them humbled by fellow newly promoted team Cambuur, who thrashed them 6-1 at home. The match against PSV was especially disappointing for new manager Jurgen Streppel, who took over after a decade away from the club. Having only signed on until season’s end, more results like this could spur another coaching change in Tilburg before the season concludes. However, Streppel has had limited time to turn things around.
Amidst this season’s turmoil, the club’s social media manager might find solace in the decision to leave X back in June. This will be especially true if they face further humiliation against PEC Zwolle in their upcoming Eredivisie matchup. For the loyal Willem II supporters, it appears to be a long and arduous season ahead.
