Rafael Nadal Set to Join Real Madrid Board

Tennis star Rafael Nadal is preparing to take a position on the board of directors for Spanish football powerhouse Real Madrid.

Nadal, who has achieved remarkable success with 22 Grand Slam titles and two Olympic gold medals, is set to retire in 2024.

Members of Real Madrid will vote on Nadal’s appointment at an upcoming meeting later this month.

In a statement announcing this development, the club described Nadal as “one of the greatest legends in the history of sport and one of the most admired and recognized Spanish athletes in the world.”

“It is a great source of pride that a figure of his sporting and human stature, a benchmark of Spanish and world sport, will become part of our board of directors and contribute, from this position of responsibility, to the present and future of our club,” Real Madrid added.

Nadal, a lifelong supporter of Real Madrid with membership number 67,778, shared a childhood photo wearing the club’s kit in his response to the announcement.

“I want to thank president Florentino Perez and the board for proposing that I join the board of directors of Real Madrid,” Nadal said in his post on X.

“I have accepted this proposal with great excitement, a desire to learn, and a willingness to contribute everything I can.”

The specific responsibilities Nadal will undertake on the board remain unclear.

Perez was re-elected for a new four-year term as president of Real Madrid in June, a role he has maintained since 2009.

Following his re-election, Perez quickly appointed Jose Mourinho as head coach for a second time, aiming to boost the club’s performance after two seasons without securing a trophy in La Liga, the Champions League, or the Copa del Rey.

Currently, Real Madrid sits third in the league standings after 11 matches, trailing just three points behind defending champions Barcelona.
