Rennes and Olympiacos Settle for Scoreless Draw in Unbeaten Europa League Start

Stade Rennais and Olympiacos Fail to Break Deadlock in Goalless Europa League Clash

Stade Rennais and Olympiacos played to a goalless draw (0-0) in the UEFA Europa League, both teams maintaining their unbeaten records in a match that lacked excitement.

After a recent performance that saw them concede five goals against Nice, Rennais faced scrutiny regarding their defensive capabilities, which Olympiacos aimed to exploit. Just one minute into the match, Armando Gonzalez missed an unmarked header, and soon after, Brice Samba was called into action to deny Gustavo Puerta’s close-range attempt, aided by his near post.

By the 20-minute mark, Olympiacos had already registered five shots on goal. As Rennais struggled to find their rhythm, Moussa Al-Taamari emerged as their key player, pushing the team forward. His efforts began to bear fruit as he increasingly involved his teammates, with Charlie Cresswell’s header being the first notable challenge to Olympiacos goalkeeper Stefan Ortega.

Rennes Follow in Marseille’s Footsteps

Sébastien Szymanski nearly broke the deadlock with a clever free-kick that only grazed the side netting. Al-Taamari then came close to scoring again, hitting the near post from a tight angle, although he was flagged offside. He later caused confusion that led to an attempted own goal by Bruno Onyemaechi, although the Rennes forward did not touch the ball.

Olympique de Marseille had previously discovered how challenging it is to break through the Olympiacos defense, and Rennais encountered similar difficulties after halftime. Despite increasing their attacking intent, they struggled to create significant scoring opportunities. Al-Taamari’s best attempt came just before the hour mark, but his shot went astray.

As the second half progressed, the match mirrored the earlier stages, with Al-Taamari frequently leading the charge. Meanwhile, Olympiacos controlled the ball and dictated play. Gelson Martins failed to convert a free header, directing it straight at Samba, while Roman Yaremchuk’s header skimmed just above the bar.

Al-Taamari Leads the Charge But Sees Limited Results

Al-Taamari’s efforts to energize his team were evident, especially with Esteban Lepaul sidelined due to injury, leaving a noticeable gap in Rennais’ attacking options. Despite their best efforts, Olympiacos’ forwards could not seize control of the match. Both teams appeared prepared to settle for a draw.

In injury time, Valentin Rongier finally forced a significant save from Ortega, momentarily igniting the crowd at Roazhon Park. However, the excitement was short-lived, with the match concluding in a stalemate.

Reflecting on the match, Al-Taamari stated, “We did a great job. Olympiacos are a good team. We pushed in the second half, but we take the one point. It isn’t bad.”
