Peyton Manning Could Influence Troy Aikman, Joe Buck on MNF

Peyton Manning Emerges as Contender for ESPN’s Monday Night Football Commentator Role

ESPN’s Monday Night Football is set to undergo changes next season, with color commentator Troy Aikman reportedly not continuing alongside play-by-play announcer Joe Buck. Sources indicate that Buck has signed an extension with ESPN, while Aikman has not, creating a vacancy in a key broadcasting position.

This development has led to speculation regarding a potential shift for former NFL quarterback Peyton Manning, who has been actively involved in media. Manning currently hosts an alternate broadcast of Monday Night Football, known as the ManningCast, alongside his brother Eli.

Could Manning transition into the color commentary role alongside Buck? Recent insights have surfaced regarding this possibility.

Peyton Manning to Monday Night Football?

The Athletic’s Andrew Marchand recently discussed the chances of Manning joining Buck in a traditional commentary capacity. Marchand stated, “I believe Peyton is the top candidate to fill Aikman’s spot, but I don’t think he is the frontrunner.” He elaborated that ESPN Chairman Jimmy Pitaro is likely to contact Manning about stepping into the booth, as the network has a substantial contract with Manning and his entity, Omaha Productions, which includes producing the ManningCast for around 11 games each season.

However, Marchand pointed out a challenge in this scenario: while ESPN may be interested in having Manning in the commentary role, it is uncertain whether Manning would accept the position. Marchand noted, “If given the chance, ESPN would probably prefer to pair Manning with Buck. Buck recently moved to Denver, just five minutes from Peyton’s home. Yet, Manning has consistently declined offers for booth commentary, opting instead for his comfortable arrangement working from home with Eli. A hybrid model, where they split games, seems more likely but still not guaranteed.”

ManningCast Dilemma

This season, the ManningCast has experienced a decline in viewership compared to previous years, raising some concerns for ESPN. The concept of an alternate broadcast remains appealing to the network, aiming to attract viewers who might not typically tune in to Monday Night Football.

However, continued drops in viewership for the ManningCast may prompt ESPN to consider changes. Some commentators suggest that the broadcast could benefit from featuring fewer guest appearances and more interaction between the Manning brothers. If Manning decides against moving to the main booth, it will present a challenge for ESPN to address moving forward.
