Multiple NWSL Teams Face Stadium Conflicts Ahead of Playoffs

NWSL Playoffs Face Venue Conflicts as Semifinals Approach

With the NWSL playoffs kicking off this weekend, teams are encountering potential complications tied to stadium scheduling for the semifinal round next weekend. The top three seeds in the tournament—Gotham FC, San Diego Wave, and Washington Spirit—are all grappling with conflicts that could impact their playoff matches, according to a report by ESPN’s Jeff Kassouf.

The playoffs began with a tightly contested race, culminating in the matchup of eight teams this weekend for four quarterfinals, leading to two semifinals scheduled for November 14 and 15. While the exact timings are still being finalized, the Saturday game is likely to take place at noon ET and the Sunday game at 3 p.m. ET.

However, the Saturday slot is particularly challenging to navigate, as all three top-ranked teams are facing significant venue issues. The top two teams advancing to the semifinals are set to host those matches.

Gotham FC, which plays its home games at Sports Illustrated Stadium, is sharing the venue with the MLS’s New York Red Bulls, who have a friendly match scheduled against Club América at 7:30 p.m. that same evening. This friendly was announced on October 5, while the NWSL playoff schedule has been in place since the season began.

San Diego Wave will also contend with scheduling issues at Snapdragon Stadium due to a San Diego State football game taking place at 6:30 p.m. local time. Similarly, the Spirit’s home stadium, Audi Field, is booked for a Division III college football game at 1 p.m. ET on November 14.

The NWSL faces challenges in adjusting the timetable, as it aims to retain its national broadcast slots and accommodate the busy fall sport schedules. Consequently, the league is considering alternative, smaller venues for the semifinals. If both Gotham and San Diego emerge victorious from their quarterfinals, Gotham may switch its match to Icahn Stadium, which holds 5,000 spectators and is located on Randalls Island in New York. Gotham has previously held a regular-season game at this stadium, winning against the Seattle Reign.

Should either Gotham or San Diego be eliminated, the Spirit could potentially host a Saturday semifinal at Northwest Field, home of the Washington Commanders.

This situation echoes the venue conflicts previously faced by the WNBA during last month’s finals, particularly for the Atlanta Dream, which struggled to secure a location due to scheduling conflicts with the NBA’s Atlanta Hawks. The resolution was to shift the game to State Farm Arena for a 12:30 p.m. ET start on a Thursday.

NWSL teams generally find themselves in less favorable positions regarding venue arrangements. For the San Diego Wave, university commitments give priority to the Aztecs at Snapdragon Stadium. Similarly, Gotham FC’s stadium is governed by the parent company of the New York Red Bulls, while Audi Field’s overlapping schedule poses threats to the Spirit’s participation.

Another influencing factor includes broadcast scheduling, as NWSL games often land in less advantageous time slots to accommodate other sports. Prior to 2023, NWSL games did not frequently feature on national broadcasts, but the league has sought to enhance visibility through its current media rights deal, sometimes leading to logistical challenges.

In an interview with ESPN, Meghann Burke, executive director of the NWSL Players Association, acknowledged the league’s efforts in navigating these conflicts, remarking that broader investment and control over venues are fundamental to resolving these recurring issues. She emphasized the need for independent venue management to alleviate future conflicts, highlighting that only the Kansas City Current owns its stadium, CPKC Stadium, which opened in 2024. However, their ability to host a semifinal remains contingent on the outcomes of the top teams in the postseason.
