Barcelona Targets Seven Centre-Backs for January Transfer Window, Reports Say

Barcelona Evaluates Seven Centre-Back Options Ahead of January Transfer Window

Barcelona is currently exploring seven potential signings for the centre-back position as the club prepares for the January transfer window. Manager Hansi Flick aims to address the defensive issues that have plagued the team this season.

As reported by SPORT, sporting director Deco is evaluating a number of options. However, the club’s limited financial resources make it challenging to find affordable reinforcements.

Barcelona opted not to recruit a central defender in the summer, focusing instead on bolstering their midfield and attack. However, a series of defensive injuries revealed a lack of depth within the squad, heightening the need for reinforcements as the season progresses.

In light of Barcelona’s financial constraints, Deco is pursuing options involving loans, budget-friendly transfers, and players whose contracts may allow for easier acquisition.

Fikayo Tomori and Vitor Reis Among Top Targets

One of the top candidates under consideration is AC Milan’s Fikayo Tomori.

The English defender, whose contract runs until 2027, has seen Milan open to negotiating his departure in January. However, interest from multiple Premier League teams could complicate Barcelona’s chances.

Another option is Manchester City’s Vitor Reis, who has faced challenges in securing regular playing time, with just 199 minutes over four matches this season. A loan move may grant him the playing time necessary for development, though it is uncertain if City will allow his exit mid-season.

Deco has also expressed interest in Piero Hincapie due to his versatility, as the Ecuadorian can play both centre-back and left-back, aligning with Flick’s defensive strategy. Deco has already reached out to Hincapie’s representatives about a possible loan with an option to buy.

Lisandro Martinez and Lucas Beraldo Present Alternative Options

From Manchester United, Lisandro Martinez is also regarded as an appealing candidate.

Martinez’s contract situation, paired with his skill set, makes him an interesting option, but negotiating with United may prove challenging.

Additionally, Paris Saint-Germain’s Lucas Beraldo has drawn attention for his technical skills, fitting well into Barcelona’s possession-focused system. His limited playing time under Luis Enrique could make a transfer feasible.

Jorrel Hato and Jonathan Tah Round Out the Candidate List

Chelsea’s Jorrel Hato is a further contender, known for his ability to play both centre-back and left-back. Given the competition for defensive spots at Chelsea, Barcelona may pursue a loan if Hato struggles to find consistent minutes.

Lastly, Bayern Munich’s Jonathan Tah completes the list. However, his significance to Bayern makes a departure unlikely, despite Barcelona’s interest in his defensive capabilities.
