Defending Champions Larne Face Challenges in Current Season

Headline: Larne Faces Challenges After Early Season Setbacks in Irish Premiership

Heartbreak in Europe, an early exit from the ToalsBet Senior Shield, and a daunting nine-point gap from the Irish Premiership leaders have marked a tough start for Larne this season.

Friday’s 4-2 defeat to Cliftonville leaves the Inver Reds in third place, having secured only two victories across their last six matches.

As a team accustomed to setting the benchmark in the Irish League’s top tier, Larne’s efforts to defend their title have shown early signs of struggle.

What has contributed to their challenging start this campaign? BBC Sport NI investigates.

Struggles to Replace Ryan

One pressing concern for Larne at the onset of the season was their ability to fill the void left by Andy Ryan’s departure.

The 32-year-old scored 70 goals in 121 appearances and played an essential role in their recent league success and historic European journey.

Filling the shoes of a player of Ryan’s caliber has proven difficult; Larne has yet to find a consistent goal scorer this season.

Currently, the Inver Reds trail league leaders Coleraine by eight goals, as their summer signings have yet to deliver the expected impact. Montel Gibson has remained scoreless with limited playing time since joining, while Kevin O’Hara has contributed just one league goal.

Matty Lusty, who netted nine goals last season, has shown promise in patches but struggled with injuries, and Paul O’Neill, their top scorer with four goals, has also faced difficulties maintaining a regular scoring form.

A variety of goal sources is crucial for a team aiming to capture the Irish Premiership title, and Larne hopes to see key players regain their scoring touch.

Haveron Calls for Return to Identity

In previous seasons, Larne’s defensive strength was vital to their achievements.

Last year, they conceded only 26 goals to secure the title, yet this season they have already let in 14 goals, signaling a dip in resilience.

Cliftonville took advantage of defensive errors and mistakes from set-pieces during their recent match, raising concerns for manager Haveron.

“It’s definitely a concern because it’s not our usual style to concede as we have been, but we are doing it far too often,” Haveron told BBC Sport NI.

“These players are not bad; they haven’t lost their ability overnight. We need to recapture what has made us successful in the past. The hangover from European competition is evident, and we must quickly return to our defensively strong and winning ways.”

The timing of the goals conceded is another worry; in the match against Cliftonville, two goals came within the first 10 minutes, putting Larne at a disadvantage.

This summer, Larne nearly reached the group stages of a European tournament, leading to a dramatic late comeback against Lincoln Red Imps that denied them a spot. They suffered another setback in the ToalsBet Senior Shield when Dundela eliminated them in penalties after a last-minute equalizer. In the Irish Premiership, Coleraine came back from 2-0 down to secure a win at Inver Park with three second-half goals.

Haveron recognizes the significance of both starting and finishing matches strongly, making it imperative to understand the reasons behind the early and late goals they concede.

Mixed Results in League Performance

Larne initially showcased resilience following their European disappointment, winning their first six Irish Premiership matches.

However, that winning streak abruptly ended with a defeat to Coleraine, followed by another loss against fellow title contenders Linfield. In their subsequent match, they exhibited grit, coming back to win 2-1 against Bangor after trailing.

Yet, they have struggled to maintain sustained momentum since then. A frustrating draw with newly promoted Limavady United left them seeking a home win for three games, which they achieved with a late 1-0 victory over Portadown, though it lacked conviction. Their recent loss to Cliftonville prompted Haveron to concede the difficult road ahead in their title defense.

“It’s damaging to have dropped the points we have and still expect to be in contention,” Haveron remarked. “We must focus on winning our next game and hope to build some momentum towards our goals.”

While early season standings may suggest challenges ahead, the previous season’s final-day drama illustrates that many turns lie ahead, keeping Larne in the running for the title.

With ample football yet to be played, the Inver Reds possess the talent and experience to mount a comeback. However, the need for improved performance remains urgent if they aspire to defend their title successfully.
