Glentoran Held to Goalless Draw by Carrick Rangers in Irish Premiership Clash
Glentoran manager Duncan Ferguson is still searching for his first victory after his team played to a 0-0 draw against Carrick Rangers at Taylors Avenue. The match saw Carrick gain a significant share of possession, while Glentoran struggled to make an impact on the game. However, a late rally from Glentoran saw substitute Cal Weatherup strike the crossbar in the closing moments.
In the opening stages, Glentoran presented a threat when Jarlath O’Rourke delivered a cross from the right. Defender Ethan Brown rose to meet it with a header, but it narrowly missed the target, dipping just wide of the right post.
About ten minutes later, Carrick came close to scoring the first goal of the match. Paul Heatley took a corner from the left, which Glentoran failed to clear. The ball found skipper Luke McCullough eight yards out, but his attempt was cleared off the line by Jack Malone.
Carrick soon had another opportunity when Danny Gibson surged down the right flank and pulled the ball back to an unmarked Heatley. Unfortunately for the hosts, Heatley couldn’t connect cleanly, allowing the ball to roll through to goalkeeper Andrew Mills.
Glentoran almost found the net in the 27th minute when Pat Hoban, making his return, headed a left-side cross towards goal. However, Nathan Gartside was up to the task and made a crucial save to deflect the ball away.
After halftime, Carrick believed they had earned a penalty when Adam Lecky fell in the box due to a challenge from Brown, but referee Tony Clarke waved away their appeals and played on.
In stoppage time, Glentoran missed two final chances to grab a win. Aaron McEneff forced a good save from Gartside, and Weatherup’s header rattled the top of the crossbar, leaving both teams to settle for a point in the end.
