Claude Makelele Backs Aurelien Tchouameni’s Future at Real Madrid
While big names like Luis Figo, David Beckham, Zinedine Zidane, and Ronaldo Nazario grabbed most of the headlines during the initial Galactico era, Claude Makelele proved to be the most influential midfielder for Real Madrid’s success in the early 21st century.
The star-studded forward line certainly captivated the fans, but the French midfielder performed the essential defensive work: disrupting opposition plays, intercepting dangerous passes, and covering significant ground when the team faced counter-attacks.
His true value became evident following his departure to Chelsea, as the team struggled to maintain its balance and went three years without securing a trophy.
After concluding his playing career, the Frenchman transitioned into coaching. Although he is currently without a club, he remains a highly respected voice in European football, particularly regarding his former sides, Real Madrid and Chelsea.
Today, Aurelien Tchouameni appears to be the natural successor in the Merengue lineup, performing many of the same duties Makelele once mastered. Despite rumors of a potential transfer this summer, he has reportedly renewed his contract with Real Madrid, a decision that has earned Makelele’s full support.
As MARCA reports, the former French international praised his compatriot and explained why the club should retain him:
“I would never let that kind of player leave my team… [Last season] He was the only player who was consistent from start to finish.”
“Mourinho isn’t stupid. He’s a great coach, one of the best. He knows he’ll need a strong squad if he’s going to win La Liga.”
While endorsing the renewal of Tchouameni, Makelele also pointed to a specific void in the current Real Madrid midfield that explains their recent struggles:
“Real Madrid don’t have that kind of midfielder who can carry the ball and break the lines. They need a player like that—someone who can move the ball quickly to the attackers, to him [Mbappe], to Vinícius, and to the players up front.”
Jose Mourinho is reportedly pushing for a midfield signing, and it remains to be seen who will arrive this summer following the acquisition of Bernardo Silva. The club may now look to follow Claude Makelele’s advice by signing a player capable of progressing the ball to the front line, effectively addressing one of the team’s primary tactical weaknesses.
