Liverpool Faces Midfield Challenges Following Draw Against Newcastle

Liverpool’s midfield has emerged as a significant concern following their 2-2 draw against Newcastle on Sunday. The match highlighted the limitations of Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch, who struggled to effectively manage the double pivot role throughout the match.

Both players’ decision to advance and push forward led to gaps in Liverpool’s defense, allowing Anthony Elanga to exploit the openings and score Newcastle’s first goal. This defensive lapse underscored the urgent need for Liverpool to acquire a new defensive midfielder, making it a priority in the upcoming transfer window.

Currently, there are discussions around potential signings, with Adam Wharton and Lamine Camara being two names frequently linked to a move to Anfield. However, a new option seems to have surfaced, which could be even more appealing as he is a homegrown talent.

BBC Sport journalist Sami Mokbel reported that Tottenham Hotspur is interested in signing Neco Williams from Nottingham Forest, which raises questions about the impact of such a move. Forest is reportedly focused on extending Williams’ contract and is not contemplating selling him at this time. If Spurs were to successfully sign Williams, it could lead to competition for a starting position for Archie Gray, another player they have targeted.

Liverpool has shown a long-standing interest in Gray, and with the transfer window closing soon, the possibility of a move remains viable.

In addition, Gray’s versatility makes him a strong candidate. While his best position is defensive midfielder, he has also excelled as a right-back. Given Liverpool’s current needs, acquiring Gray would not only address immediate concerns but also enhance the squad’s overall depth, paving the way for a potential trophy lift for manager Andoni Iraola.

Liverpool‘s midfield is one of their main problem areas at the moment.

Sunday’s 2-2 draw against Newcastle proved that Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch can’t be relied upon to play a double pivot all season.

The midfield duo were one of the main reasons why Liverpool conceded their first goal against the Magpies as both of them decided it was a good idea to push forward rather than have one of them stay back.

This led to Liverpool’s defence being left open which allowed Anthony Elanga to counter-attack the Anfield outfit and bag Newcastle’s first goal.

Not only did this outing prove that Liverpool need a new defensive midfielder but, it also outlined why a new number six should be one of their main priorities this summer.

And now, Andoni Iraola and Richard Hughes may have just been handed the perfect opportunity to sign themselves a new defensive midfielder.

As mentioned, Liverpool’s midfield feels like their main problem area at the moment.

Szoboszlai and Gravenberch may have just signed long-term deals with the Reds but, change is still very clearly needed.

Adam Wharton and Lamine Camara have been two of the main defensive midfielders to have been linked with an Anfield switch but now, another option may have just emerged.

And, to make things even better, he’s homegrown.

As per an update from BBC Sport journalist Sami Mokbel, Tottenham are eyeing a move for Neco Williams.

“Nottingham Forest resolved to keep Neco Williams amid late interest from Tottenham,” he shared via X.

“Exploratory talks for full-back taken place but Forest currently not contemplating sale and focused on extending Williams’ contract.”

Now, fans may be asking what this has to do with Iraola’s men but, if Williams is signed by Spurs, that’ll mean that they have Pedro Porro, Archie Gray and the Welshman who can all play as right-backs.

And, while depth is obviously good, at this stage in his career, Gray will want to be guaranteed a starting role and, since his best position is as a number six, he could end up wanting to exit Spurs if another player in his position is signed.

Liverpool have had a long-standing interest in the Englishman and, even though there’s less than a week left of the window, a move could definitely be on.

Archie Gray could be perfect for Liverpool

Versatility is key to a footballer in this day and age.

If you can’t play in more than one position, it feels unlikely that you’d be signed by a team unless you was one of the best in the world in that role.

This is another reason why Gray would be a solid addition.

His best position is obviously as a defensive midfielder but, throughout his career, his performances at right-back have often dazzled.

He’s also homegrown which is another one of the major issues that Liverpool are facing at the moment.

Indeed, he’d probably cost the Reds a decent chunk of change but, on the face of things, it feels like a very smart move for both parties.

As, it’s now more than clear that a new midfielder would massively improve Iraola’s chances of adding some silverware to Liverpool’s trophy cabinet.
