Aston Villa target World Cup standout Julián Quiñones for summer transfer
Aston Villa are considering a surprise transfer move. Reports from Sky Sport Switzerland, citing journalist Sacha Tavolieri, indicate that Unai Emery’s recruitment team is focusing on Mexico international Julián Quiñones. Villa scouts tracked the forward throughout the 2026 World Cup, where he impressed before England eliminated Mexico in the round of 16.
Aston Villa eye World Cup striker in bold summer move
The club has recently intensified contact with the player’s representatives. While they have not submitted an official bid to Al-Qadsiah, their interest in the striker is concrete. Emery seeks a new frontline option to strengthen his squad following their Europa League victory against Freiburg and their subsequent qualification for the Champions League.
Quiñones delivered impressive statistics this season. He concluded his Saudi Pro League campaign with 33 goals and 4 assists in 31 appearances, averaging more than a goal per game. This performance earned him the golden boot, finishing ahead of Ivan Toney and Cristiano Ronaldo. He maintained that momentum during the World Cup, where he scored the tournament’s opening goal against South Africa and finished with four goals total.
Why the deal faces significant roadblocks
Although the move looks promising on paper, it remains complicated. Quiñones signed a contract extension with Al-Qadsiah on May 25, tying him to the Saudi club until 2029. While Transfermarkt estimates his market value at approximately €14m, his wealthy club faces no financial pressure to sell their key player.
Tactical concerns also exist. The 29-year-old forward has spent his entire career in Mexico and Saudi Arabia and has never played in a European league. The Premier League presents a distinct challenge, as Emery demands a high work rate, intense pressing, and precise link-up play from his forwards.
Financial constraints are another factor. Villa hold roughly £100m in their summer transfer budget, but they must allocate those funds across multiple positions, including two wingers and a right-back. Although Tammy Abraham joined in January, his long-term future is uncertain, and previous UEFA financial agreements prevent the club from spending recklessly. Consequently, other targets may prove more practical.
Serhou Guirassy remains linked to the club, and his representatives have expressed interest. Guirassy possesses proven Bundesliga experience and Champions League pedigree, which would likely allow him to adapt to the English game immediately. While Quiñones is a talented player, the logistical difficulty of navigating his recent contract extension makes this transfer appear unlikely.
