Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez faced jeers from supporters during his team’s 2-2 draw against Villarreal in La Liga, amid ongoing transfer speculation regarding his future.
Alvarez shared during the World Cup that he wants to leave Atletico in pursuit of his dreams and has been linked with potential transfers to Arsenal and Barcelona, especially with the transfer deadline approaching on September 1.
The forward began the game on the bench but was notably booed while warming up, and the discontent grew when he was substituted in during the 66th minute. Following the match, after Giuliano Simeone scored late to secure a point for Atletico, Alvarez left the pitch hurriedly, prompting more boos from the home crowd.
Coach Diego Simeone later indicated that Alvarez’s swift exit was a club decision, implying it was pre-arranged for the player to avoid joining his teammates post-match.
Marc Pubill initially put Atletico ahead with an impressive strike just before the hour mark, but Gerard Moreno quickly leveled the score with a penalty kick shortly thereafter.
Atletico appeared to be on the verge of a loss when Robin le Normand was dismissed in the 76th minute for a foul on Georges Mikautadze inside the penalty box, allowing Mikautadze to convert the resulting penalty.
However, a rapid counter-attack in the final minutes led to Simeone’s equalizing goal.
The draw leaves Atletico Madrid with one win and one draw from their opening two La Liga fixtures, while Villarreal continues to search for their first victory of the season after two draws.

Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez was booed by his own fans amid speculation about his future as his side drew with Villarreal in La Liga.
Alvarez said during the World Cup that he wants to leave Atletico to “fulfil my dream”, and has since been linked with moves to Arsenal and Barcelona ahead of transfer deadline day on 1 September.

He started on the bench against Villarreal but was jeered while warming up and there were even louder boos when he came on in the 66th minute.
After Giuliano Simeone struck late on to rescue a point for Atletico, Alvarez headed straight down the tunnel at full time, drawing more boos.
Boss Diego Simeone suggested afterwards however that it was a pre-agreed club decision for the forward to not join his team-mates at full time and head to the dressing room instead.
Marc Pubill had given Atletico the lead just before the hour mark when he curled in a fine strike, but Gerard Moreno levelled soon after from the penalty spot.

It looked like Atletico were heading for defeat when Robin le Normand was sent off in the 76th minute for a foul on Georges Mikautadze inside the box, and the Georgia forward stepped up to convert the penalty.
But a swift counter with five minutes to go by Atletico ended with Simeone sliding a neat finish home.
The draw means Atletico have won one and drawn one of their first two La Liga games of the season, while Villarreal have drawn both of their matches.
