Headline: Ander Herrera Shares Insights on Jose Mourinho’s Management Style and Challenges at Real Madrid
Former Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera has provided insights into Jose Mourinho’s management style, drawing from his experience with the Portuguese coach at Old Trafford. As Mourinho continues to work with Real Madrid, aiming to bring the club back to its previous heights, Herrera discussed the demanding nature of Mourinho’s approach, his player relationships, and the emphasis he places on character.
Speaking on the El Camino de Mario podcast (h/t SPORT), Herrera evaluated the challenges Mourinho now faces at Real Madrid, where high expectations loom following two challenging seasons and the departure of key midfielders Toni Kroos and Luka Modric from the club’s successful past.
Herrera Explains Mourinho’s Demanding Management Style
During his time under Mourinho at Manchester United, Herrera gained firsthand insight into a manager who encourages players to receive criticism and embrace their roles within the team.
Instead of viewing tension as a hindrance to building relationships, Herrera believes Mourinho utilizes it to foster resilience and define team standards.

“For me, Mou is a manager who builds character. He comes from a style of football where players weren’t easily offended. Criticism was accepted, understood, and the pecking order was respected,” he expressed.

Herrera also recounted an instance highlighting Mourinho’s candid nature, recalling how the manager addressed him directly after a Europa League match against Saint-Etienne, yet their relationship quickly returned to normal.

“I remember a match after the Saint-Etienne game in the Europa League when he came up to me in front of everyone and told me it had been a disaster and so on… and well, the next day we had a hug,” he shared.
Real Madrid Faces a Difficult Transition Under Mourinho
Mourinho’s return to Real Madrid presents a fresh array of challenges.
The club strives to regain consistency amid the pressure stemming from recent struggles and the transition away from the established midfield presence of Kroos and Modric.
Herrera believes the magnitude of the challenge is significant. “I can see he’s got a tough nut to crack.”

“Real Madrid are coming off the back of two difficult years with a lot of noise surrounding the team, and a lot of noise surrounding their stars too, in a post-Kroos, post-Modrić era – it’s not easy. It’s tough.”

Recently, Real Madrid’s performance has improved, highlighted by victories in the Champions League and El Clasico.
Their 2-1 victory over Barcelona, which included a brace from Kylian Mbappe, provided a significant boost against their main rivals, despite a performance that wasn’t completely convincing.

Herrera Supports Mourinho in Rivalry with Barcelona
The challenge intensifies as Real Madrid’s objectives align against Barcelona’s capacity to compete vigorously.
Under Hansi Flick, the Catalan side has proven to be a significant hurdle, establishing the rivalry between the clubs as a crucial test for Mourinho’s latest tenure at Madrid.
Recognizing the complexity of the situation, Herrera maintains confidence in Mourinho’s ability to steer the team in a positive direction.
“And then, against a Barça side that’s unbeatable. It’s a case of everything coming together, but if there’s one person who has the charisma and—I’d even say—the drive to turn things around, it’s him.
“He already did it during his first spell, when he managed—I don’t know if he turned things around completely—but he certainly rose to the level of that Barça side,” he concluded.
