Arsenal has successfully acquired Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle United for a fee of £75 million.

The former captain of Newcastle had expressed a desire to join the Premier League champions earlier this summer.

The 28-year-old Brazilian midfielder signed a four-year contract, which includes an option for an additional year. He stated that this transition ranks among the “toughest decisions” he has faced.

“This move is very tough because Newcastle means so much to me,” Guimaraes shared.

“But I wanted to experience something new in my life. I feel ready for a new challenge for myself and my family.”

Newcastle extended their best wishes to Guimaraes and his family upon his departure.

He left Newcastle’s training facility in La Manga, Spain, earlier this week to finalize his transfer to Emirates Stadium after negotiations reached a successful conclusion.

Guimaraes noted that he received supportive messages from several future teammates, including fellow Brazilian Gabriel and midfielder Declan Rice, who humorously told him, “come here and please no more fights, now we’re friends.”

“I’m at a point in my life where I think I need a challenge like this,” Guimaraes remarked.

“I want to win trophies, I want to make history, and I believe I’m in the right place to achieve that. I’m so excited to start.”

Guimaraes initially joined a struggling Newcastle side in January 2022 and played a significant role in their resurgence under former manager Eddie Howe.

He made history by becoming the first captain in over 70 years to lift a major domestic trophy for Newcastle, leading the team to victory over Liverpool in the 2025 EFL Cup final.

Guimaraes was also instrumental in helping Newcastle qualify for the Champions League in both 2023 and 2025, although they experienced a decline, finishing 12th in the Premier League last season.

Guimaraes left Newcastle’s training camp in La Manga in Spain earlier this week to finalise his move to Emirates Stadium following a breakthrough in talks.

He revealed he received messages from a number of his future team-mates, including countryman Gabriel as well as fellow midfielder Declan Rice, who told him “come here and please no more fights, now we’re friends”.

Guimaraes joined a Newcastle side in relegation trouble in January 2022 and went on to play a crucial role in their improvement in fortunes under former head coach Eddie Howe.

Guimaraes became the first captain in seven decades to lift a major domestic trophy for Newcastle after they defeated Liverpool in the 2025 EFL Cup final.

He was also part of the side who qualified for the Champions League in 2023 and 2025, before they slipped to 12th place in the Premier League last season.
