Arsenal Under-18s Begin Season with Goalless Draw Against West Brom

Jack Talbot played a crucial role as Arsenal’s under-18 team kicked off their 2026-27 Premier League South season with a goalless draw away against West Bromwich Albion, securing a clean sheet through a disciplined defensive effort.

The match also marked the competitive debuts for two new talents from Arsenal’s academy, showcasing the club’s promising future in league football.

In the first half, both teams struggled to create clear chances, with the closest effort coming from West Brom’s Harry French, who hit the crossbar. Arsenal’s most significant opportunity before halftime fell to Maalik Hashi, whose direct free-kick went into the side-netting.

The second half opened up more, but it was Talbot’s heroics that remained the highlight as he delivered a series of crucial saves. West Brom applied increasing pressure, yet Talbot stood firm, ensuring Arsenal maintained their clean sheet with an impressive display.

While Arsenal had their own chances in the second half, they were unable to achieve a breakthrough, settling for a point as the league season commenced.

The inclusion of Jaden Maghoma and Daniel McCarron, who both made their Under-18 debuts after participating in the recent Shanghai Future Star Cup, also provided promising signs for the future.

After the match, Talbot reflected on his performance, stating, “It was a tough game, we knew it was going to be scrappy coming up here to West Brom. I think in the first half, we had to kind of ride the storm a bit and keep them out, and that’s what we did, which gave us a platform to perform in the second half. I enjoyed making saves in the second half.”

Looking ahead, Arsenal’s young squad will prepare for their first home match of the Under-18 Premier League season against Ipswich Town next Saturday.

Arsenal opened their 2026-27 Under-18 Premier League South season with a goalless draw away to West Brom, collecting a clean sheet and an away point after a disciplined defensive display.

Jack Talbot ensured Arsenal’s under-18s began the new campaign with something to build on, producing a string of important saves as the young Gunners claimed a hard-earned point away from home.

The opening day draw at West Bromwich Albion also featured first competitive appearances for two of Arsenal’s latest academy prospects, offering an early glimpse of the next generation stepping into league football.

The first half was a tightly contested affair with few clear opportunities, although the hosts came closest to breaking the deadlock when Harry French struck the crossbar.

Arsenal’s best chance before the interval came through Maalik Hashi, whose direct free-kick found the side-netting.

The match became more open after the restart, but it was Talbot who emerged as the decisive figure.

The goalkeeper produced a succession of impressive second-half saves as West Brom increased the pressure, preserving Arsenal’s clean sheet with a standout individual performance.

Despite enjoying moments of their own after the break, Arsenal were unable to find the breakthrough, settling for a point to begin the league season.

There was also encouragement in the inclusion of Jaden Maghoma and Daniel McCarron, who both made their Arsenal Under-18 debuts after featuring in the club’s successful Shanghai Future Star Cup campaign earlier this month.

Reflecting on his display after the final whistle, Talbot said: “It was a tough game, we knew it was going to be scrappy coming up here to West Brom.

“I think in the first half, we had to kind of ride the storm a bit and keep them out and that’s what we did, and that gave us a platform to perform in the second half.

“Then obviously we had moments and I was making saves in the second half, so I enjoyed it.”

Arsenal’s young side will now turn their attention to their first home fixture of the new Under-18 Premier League campaign when Ipswich Town visit next Saturday.
