Arsenal Women Tweak Tactics but Results Remain Unchanged

Arsenal’s Home Struggles Continue with Draw Against Aston Villa

Arsenal’s search for a home victory hit another snag as the team managed only a draw against Aston Villa at the Emirates Stadium. This result sparked renewed concerns regarding the team’s direction and performance.

Despite recent wins against Tottenham and Benfica, Arsenal returned to their troubling home form. The match showcased familiar issues, with the team slipping into the same patterns that have led to frustration throughout the season.

According to Opta, Arsenal’s opponents have now scored with their first shot in both of their past two Women’s Super League (WSL) games. This marks the first time since 2015 that the Gunners have conceded the opening goal in three consecutive home matches within the same top-flight season, revealing persistent vulnerabilities.

In fact, in three of their four home fixtures, Arsenal’s rivals have managed to score from a single shot on target. The only exception came from Manchester United, who converted one goal from three shots on target.

Although Arsenal boasts an elite goalkeeper nearing full fitness, the team’s defensive issues were painfully evident in the goal conceded against Villa. The Arsenal players pressed high as Villa attempted to build from the back, committing six players forward, which ultimately left them exposed.

Akane Okuma’s long pass found a Villa midfielder, who quickly played the ball to the wide position, creating a one-on-one situation against Arsenal’s Steph Catley. Such defensive lapses have become all too common, raising questions about team balance and strategy.

The Gunners faced repeated issues with their tactical approach, especially during pressing opportunities. Numerous instances of the high press failing led to Villa breaking through Arsenal’s lines with just a few quick touches.

The attacking problems persisted as well, with challenges in finishing and the final ball contributing to yet another instance of Arsenal chasing a game at home. The situation felt reminiscent of past struggles, and some began to speculate if there was a mental barrier affecting the players at the Emirates.

While Alessia Russo has stepped up with several goals, the contributions from other squad members remained insufficient. This brings forth several lingering questions: Are tactical decisions causing issues? Are players being utilized inappropriately? Is the pressure of playing at home affecting performance? Or is the coaching staff at fault?

At present, Arsenal appears to be competing in the mid-table of the WSL. The upcoming Champions League matches against Barcelona and OL Lyonnes will provide clearer insight into the team’s true standing. Should Arsenal remain in the top four after these fixtures, hope will linger for better outcomes.

The upcoming match against the London City Lionesses could be pivotal. If managerial changes are on the horizon, they may occur around the end of November with the international break.

However, any new managerial appointment would need to bring fresh strategies and a playing style that aligns with the current squad’s abilities.
