Few defenders in Saudi Arabia produced a stronger campaign. During the 2025/26 Saudi Pro League season, Ibañez played 28 league matches, scored twice, supplied two assists and completed 106 clearances alongside 26 interceptions. He finished with an impressive 85% passing accuracy across 2,426 league minutes, although his aggressive style brought three yellow cards and two red cards.

His influence stretched beyond domestic football. Across all competitions, he made 41 appearances, featuring prominently in Al-Ahli’s AFC Champions League Elite campaign before earning selection for Brazil’s 2026 FIFA World Cup squad.

Aston Villa Should Only Act If the Situation Changes

There’s plenty to admire. Ibañez attacks first balls with conviction, recovers quickly after defensive transitions and feels comfortable stepping into midfield when space opens. He can even cover at right-back, giving coaches another tactical option without changing personnel.

Still, Villa don’t lack centre-halves. Ezri Konsa, Pau Torres, Tyrone Mings, and Victor Lindelöf already give Emery several experienced choices. Spending significant money and wages on another central defender makes little sense while those options remain available, especially with profit and sustainability rules shaping every major decision.

Everything shifts if Arsenal complete a deal worth more than £50 million for Konsa. At that point, replacing a first-choice defender becomes essential rather than optional. Ibañez would suddenly offer excellent value because his contract expires next summer, his renewal talks have stalled, and his price should fall well below the premium attached to defenders with similar experience and international pedigree.
