Aston Villa has reportedly set its sights on West Ham United winger Crysencio Summerville. Reports from Italy and the Netherlands indicate that the Villans are now in the midst of a competitive summer transfer window.

Aston Villa considers Crysencio Summerville transfer

According to Sport Mediaset, as confirmed by various transfer sources, Unai Emery aims to challenge Manchester United, who have also shown interest in the 24-year-old. Voetbalprimeur.nl corroborated this information, revealing that Villa is one of the clubs closely monitoring the Dutch winger.

Summerville is not hurrying his decision. Turning 25 later this year, he is currently in Miami preparing for the upcoming season. He plans to meet with his representatives once he returns.

Meanwhile, negotiations are intensifying as Roma is also circling. Manchester United’s interest remains contingent on Marcus Rashford’s future. West Ham reportedly values Summerville at £50 million, making the transfer situation more complex for interested clubs.

The challenge of a high price tag

Looking at the recent Premier League season, Summerville recorded five goals and two assists in 31 appearances. He played 2,483 minutes in the league, which, while respectable, does not stand out remarkably.

His overall statistics for all competitions reveal seven goals and two assists from 27 starts, earning a Sofascore rating of 7.14. Examining his performance metrics, Summerville completes 47.2% of his take-ons, averages 1.89 shots per game, and holds a non-penalty expected goals figure of 6.97. This positions him in the 79th percentile among Premier League attackers.

Then came the World Cup, significantly altering perceptions.

Summerville impressed while representing the Netherlands, scoring twice in the tournament, with a standout goal against Japan showcasing his technical skill. This resurgence has prompted West Ham to raise their asking price to around £42-43 million to initiate discussions.

Emery faces challenges on the wing, making the interest in Summerville logical. With Jadon Sancho returning to Manchester United after his loan, and Leon Bailey’s future uncertain, Villa needs a direct player. Summerville’s pace and ability to challenge defenders fit well with Emery’s high-press strategy, especially given his recent international performance.

However, £42 million is a significant outlay. Summerville has a goal rate of just 0.18 per ninety minutes. Even though he completes 50.5% of his duels and efficiently carries the ball, his overall output raises questions about value for money.

If Villa decides to make a substantial investment, alternative options like 20-year-old Roony Bardghji, who could offer long-term benefits, are also being considered, though he would need development time. While Summerville has potential, spending £50 million for limited goal contributions carries inherent risks.

Additionally, Villa has other urgent priorities. With Amadou Onana dealing with a serious injury and Youri Tielemans moving to Manchester United, the midfield requires urgent reinforcement. Allocating the bulk of the budget for a winger amidst critical needs in the midfield could be seen as a risky strategy, especially when Paris Saint-Germain could easily outmatch their financial offers.
