Augsburg Moves to Sign Bayern’s Arijon Ibrahimović on Loan with Option to Buy

Augsburg is on the verge of securing Bayern Munich attacker Arijon Ibrahimović for a season-long loan, having reached an agreement with the German champions that includes an €8 million purchase option. The 20-year-old forward is set to undergo a medical examination on Monday prior to finalizing the deal. As part of the arrangement, Augsburg will pay Bayern a loan fee of €500,000 while retaining the option to purchase Ibrahimović permanently next summer.

Bayern has decided against a buy-back option in this agreement, although they are expected to receive a share of any future transfer fee should Augsburg activate the purchase option. This decision marks a significant shift in strategy for Ibrahimović, who had recently seen his contract with Bayern extended through 2028 after the club initially planned to keep him as a backup for Luis Díaz.

The Germany youth international had a strong pre-season, scoring three goals and proving his adaptability both as a central forward and on the left flank. However, he did not see any playing time during Bayern’s Supercup victory over Borussia Dortmund or their 5-1 Bundesliga opening win against VfB Stuttgart. FCB Board Member for Sport, Max Eberl, remarked that maintaining regular playing time would likely become increasingly challenging for Ibrahimović.

    Augsburg Secure €8m Purchase Option

Augsburg has capitalized on Bayern’s willingness to allow another player to leave the club. They previously expressed interest in signing Ibrahimović last year and renewed their pursuits as the transfer window neared its end. Although Werder Bremen and Serie A’s Atalanta also showed interest, Augsburg ultimately succeeded in securing the player.

The €8 million purchase option reflects Augsburg’s belief in Ibrahimović’s long-term potential. Should they choose to activate it next summer, he would become one of the highest transfer fees in the club’s history. After spending last season on loan at Heidenheim, his performances there contributed to a rise in his market value, granting him the chance to solidify a place in Bayern’s first-team this summer.

Augsburg presents a more promising pathway to regular playing time for the young attacker, who can function effectively on the left wing or in a central role. He will also join fellow Germany U21 teammates Mert Kömür and Anton Kade under head coach Manuel Baum.

Augsburg’s transfer activities may not conclude with Ibrahimović’s arrival. Manchester City defender Juma Bah is currently in Bavaria as the clubs finalize another loan agreement, while potential departures of Kristijan Jakić and Alexis Claude-Maurice are also on the horizon.

Augsburg are closing in on the signing of Bayern Munich attacker Arijon Ibrahimović after reaching an agreement with the German champions over a season-long loan containing an €8m purchase option. The 20-year-old is expected to undergo his medical on Monday before completing the move. Augsburg will reportedly pay Bayern a €500,000 loan fee and retain the option to purchase Ibrahimović permanently next summer.

Bayern will not possess a buy-back option should Augsburg activate the clause, although the record champions have reportedly secured a percentage of any future resale. The agreement represents a notable late-window change of direction for Ibrahimović. Bayern extended the academy product’s contract through 2028 earlier this summer and initially planned to retain him as an attacking alternative to Luis Díaz.

Get German Football News highlighted Ibrahimović’s impressive summer in our 2026/27 Bayern Munich tactical preview. The Germany youth international featured extensively throughout pre-season, scoring three times and demonstrating his versatility both through the middle and from the left.

He nevertheless remained on the bench for the entirety of Bayern’s Franz Beckenbauer Supercup victory over Borussia Dortmund and their 5-1 Bundesliga-opening win over VfB Stuttgart. FCB Board Member for Sport Max Eberl subsequently acknowledged that regular competitive minutes could prove increasingly difficult to obtain.

    Augsburg secure €8m purchase option

Augsburg have now taken advantage of Bayern’s willingness to sanction another departure. The Fuggerstädter had already explored a move for Ibrahimović last year and resumed their interest after the door reopened during the closing stages of the current window. Werder Bremen and Serie A side Atalanta were also reportedly interested, but Augsburg ultimately won the race.

The €8m purchase option represents a significant commitment to Ibrahimović’s long-term potential. Were Augsburg to activate it next summer, only two players in club history would have commanded larger transfer fees. Ibrahimović returns to another Bundesliga environment after spending last season on loan at Heidenheim. His performances there helped increase his market value and earned him another opportunity to establish himself within Bayern’s first-team squad this summer.

Augsburg should offer a clearer route to regular football. The versatile attacker can operate on the left wing or centrally and will also reunite with Germany U21 teammates Mert Kömür and Anton Kade under Manuel Baum.

Augsburg’s transfer business may not yet be finished either. Manchester City defender Juma Bah is already in Bavaria as the clubs work to finalize another loan agreement, while departures involving Kristijan Jakić and Alexis Claude-Maurice remain possible.
