Barcelona Cancels Joan Gamper Trophy Plans with Fulham Over Arbeloa Appointment
Barcelona’s search for an opponent for this year’s Joan Gamper Trophy took an unexpected turn after the club decided against inviting Fulham following the appointment of former Real Madrid defender Alvaro Arbeloa.
According to Mundo Deportivo, the Catalan club explored several options for the traditional pre-season fixture, with Fulham serving as one of the leading candidates.
A meeting with an English club stood out as an attractive option due to the competitive level of the Premier League and the opportunity to test Hansi Flick’s squad against high-quality opposition.
However, Fulham’s managerial change prompted Barcelona to reassess their plans, ultimately paving the way for Egyptian giants Al Ahly to be selected as this year’s Gamper Trophy opponents.
Fulham dropped from Barcelona’s shortlist
Barcelona intended to organize a fixture that would generate excitement while providing meaningful preparation before the competitive season begins.
Fulham fitted many of the club’s requirements, offering strong opposition and the appeal that comes with facing a Premier League side.
The situation changed once Fulham confirmed Arbeloa as their new manager.
The former Real Madrid defender remains an unpopular figure among Barcelona supporters, dating back to his playing career.
More recently, his time in Madrid’s coaching structure and various public comments further cemented that perception, making the prospect of him leading the opposition far less appealing for Barcelona.
Ajax and Cruz Azul were also considered
Fulham were not the only club under consideration during Barcelona’s planning process.
The sporting department also explored the possibility of inviting Ajax and Mexican side Cruz Azul, as both were viewed as credible alternatives for the annual showcase.
Despite those discussions, negotiations failed to produce agreements that suited all parties, as logistical and organizational factors prevented either friendly from moving forward.
As a result, Barcelona finalized an agreement with Al Ahly, one of Africa’s most successful clubs and a side with considerable international recognition.
