Barcelona Secures Karim Adeyemi in Unexpected Transfer Deal
Barcelona’s acquisition of Karim Adeyemi has fortified Hansi Flick’s attacking lineup while marking a significant shift in Borussia Dortmund’s transfer strategy.
The German winger arrived at Barcelona in a deal valued at a fixed €22 million, plus an additional €7 million based on performance-related bonuses.

Though the agreement reflects a smart financial move for Borussia Dortmund, especially given that Adeyemi had entered the last year of his contract, it fails to align with the impressive profits the Bundesliga club has become known for in the transfer market.
The financial details indicate that the transfer of Karim Adeyemi to Barcelona is one of the few significant departures from Dortmund in recent years that has not resulted in a major financial gain for the German club.
Adeyemi Transfer Deviates from Dortmund’s Typical Model
Borussia Dortmund had signed Adeyemi from RB Salzburg in 2022 for €30 million, seeing the German international as a promising young talent capable of becoming a world-class player.
However, four seasons later, Barcelona managed to secure the winger for a total package potentially reaching €29 million, preventing Dortmund from selling the player for more than their initial investment.

This outcome is unusual for a club reputed for identifying young talent, nurturing their potential, and eventually selling them at greatly increased prices.
Overview of Dortmund’s Lucrative Sales
Many of Borussia Dortmund’s most profitable sales have involved top clubs from Spain.
Notably, in 2017, Barcelona acquired Ousmane Dembele in a deal that could exceed €135 million, including bonuses.
Dortmund initially paid Rennes just €15 million a year earlier, resulting in an extraordinary profit of about €120 million.

In 2023, Real Madrid also secured Jude Bellingham after Dortmund developed the English international into one of Europe’s top midfielders.
Originally, Dortmund had signed him from Birmingham City for €29 million in 2020, later selling him to the Spanish club in 2023 for €127 million.
The club has also reaped substantial profits from players such as Jadon Sancho, Christian Pulisic, Erling Haaland, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Mario Götze, and Jamie Gittens, consolidating their status as one of the most astute clubs in the football transfer market.
