Sheffield United Manager Confirms Gus Hamer’s Likely Return to Coventry City
Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder has indicated that midfielder Gus Hamer is expected to rejoin Coventry City, who have recently secured promotion to the Premier League.
The 29-year-old Hamer has made a significant impact during his tenure with the Blades, scoring 22 goals and providing 29 assists in 123 matches since his transfer from Coventry in 2023.

Hamer, named the Championship player of the season in 2024-25, has been the subject of strong speculation regarding a return to Coventry, where he played for three years. Wilder stated that the move is “100%” likely to occur.
“We have to move on – everybody, me, supporters, players. He was a special player for us and a big player. The decision for Gus to go has many aspects,” Wilder told BBC Radio Sheffield.
“It’s not always as straightforward as people think, and we don’t want players to let their contracts run down; it’s pretty simple.
“Coventry was one of the only clubs that made an offer for him. We’ll move forward and need to find a replacement to fill that role.

“Cal [O’Hare] and Ryan [One] have played in that position [against Mansfield]. Cal played there last year when Gus was unavailable, and we had positive performances and results, although I see him more suited to a central role.”
Wilder also emphasized that Sheffield United’s chief executive Steve Bettis and the ownership understand the necessity of replacing Hamer with a “really top player.”
“I truly believe we’re in a solid position. We might be two or three players away from improving even further, and I’ll always advocate for that,” Wilder commented.
“We’ve lost Gus, Andre [Brooks] is gone, so we must progress. If we wish for quality loan players, we must be patient.

“Clubs tend to prefer permanent deals, and once they realize that’s unfeasible, then the loan options become available.”
