Cagliari talent Yael Trepy is now breathing without oxygen after emerging from a coma, as hospital officials confirmed that rapid assistance was crucial following his near-drowning in a pool. The 20-year-old striker had recently participated in a Coppa Italia match against Arezzo on August 14, where he started for his team in a 1-0 victory secured by Alessandro Deiola’s penalty.

Just two days later, Trepy was rushed to hospital in critical condition after struggling in the deep end of a pool at a private villa in Porto Cervo, Sardinia. He inhaled a significant amount of water before being rescued and airlifted to the hospital, where he was placed in an induced coma to facilitate the removal of fluid from his lungs.

Fortunately, Trepy has been taken out of the coma and is now breathing independently, having resumed eating and drinking. Stefania Milia, the director of the Intensive Care Unit at the SS Annunziata hospital in Sassari, held a press conference to give updates on the player’s situation.

“Getting help rapidly was decisive,” she confirmed, noting that first aid arrived within minutes. “He has no evident neurological deficits, but needs to be kept under observation for the time being.”

In a positive turn, one of the first things Trepy said to his doctors was a light-hearted correction of his name’s pronunciation. While the timeline for his return to the field remains uncertain, the outcome could have been much worse.

The striker joined the Cagliari youth academy in January 2023 and has tallied nine senior appearances for the team, netting one goal.

There was one very reassuring revelation about the first thing Trepy said to his doctors.

“He corrected me, because I couldn’t pronounce his name properly.”

It is not clear when Trepy will be back on the field, but the situation could’ve been far, far worse in the circumstances.
