Christian Pulisic Played Through Bone Injury During World Cup
USMNT star Christian Pulisic faced significant criticism regarding his performance and availability during the 2026 World Cup, with former USWNT legend Carli Lloyd serving as one of his most vocal detractors.
It has now emerged that his absences were due to medical issues rather than a simple need for rest. Reports on Thursday confirmed that Pulisic sustained a bone bruise and a microfracture in the tibia and fibula of his right leg. This injury forced him to leave the pitch during the second half of the USMNT’s 4-1 loss to Belgium in the Round of 16.
Pulisic is expected to remain sidelined for several weeks. However, he may recover in time for the start of the AC Milan Serie A campaign on August 23.
Prior to the disclosure of his injury, Lloyd offered sharp criticism of the player on both television and social media. Serving as an analyst for Fox Sports following the Belgium match, she stated:
“You wanted some of the big-time players to step up in big moments, and I’ve got to be honest, I was a bit disappointed in Christian Pulisic. I think, whether he wants to be the star of this team or not, we didn’t see enough from him in this particular game and really the whole World Cup.”
Lloyd also publicly dismissed the notion that players should prioritize rest during the active portion of their careers.
Following the news of the microfracture, Lloyd maintained her stance. She clarified that her comments were part of a broader critique rather than a reaction to his exit from the Round of 16, citing his absence from last year’s CONCACAF Gold Cup as a contributing factor.
Lloyd enjoyed a decorated career, winning two FIFA Women’s World Cups and two Olympic gold medals. She currently holds the second-most appearances (316) and the third-most goals (134) in U.S. soccer history.
