Celtic Announces Paulo Bernardo’s Loan to Górnik Zabrze with Buy Option
Celtic has confirmed the departure of Paulo Bernardo following a season-long loan move to Polish side Górnik Zabrze. The loan agreement includes an option for the Ekstraklasa club to purchase the Portuguese midfielder outright. The transfer was detailed in an official Celtic statement, following Bernardo’s diminishing role in the first team.
Celtic Confirm Midfielder’s Loan Exit with Buy Option
The 24-year-old midfielder joined from Benfica with high expectations, but things did not work out as planned. Over two seasons in Glasgow, Bernardo made 64 appearances in all competitions, scoring seven goals and providing seven assists, though the majority of these matches came as a substitute. During the 2025/26 season, he struggled to secure a starting position and ultimately fell out of matchday selections entirely. His absence from Celtic’s opening 1-0 Premiership victory against Dundee indicated that a departure was imminent before the official announcement.

This decision seems like prudent business. Celtic invested approximately £3.5 million to bring Bernardo to the club, expecting him to become a key midfielder. However, he often found himself on the sidelines as opportunities to play became scarce.
As competition intensified, the availability of minutes diminished. Once he fell down the hierarchy, the burden of his wages while contributing little on the field became impractical for both the football and financial sides. Loaning him to Górnik Zabrze alleviates this strain and creates extra space within the squad ahead of a demanding season.
Celtic Have Already Moved Beyond Bernardo
Bernardo’s league statistics for the 2025/26 season reflected his position within the team. He mainly appeared as a substitute and could not provide the level of consistency needed to influence the manager’s decisions. While his skills were never in doubt, his previous experience with the Portugal Under-21 team highlighted his potential, which initially attracted Celtic to pursue his signing.

However, timing plays a crucial role in football. Celtic’s current midfield is characterized by players who bring energy, physicality, and tactical understanding—qualities that Bernardo lacked as he drifted away from this profile. The buy option allows Górnik Zabrze to take charge should he regain his form, while Celtic retains the ability to secure a more permanent exit if he can enhance his value in the European market.
