Andy Townsend Calls for Chelsea to Pursue Djed Spence from Tottenham

During an appearance on talkSPORT Breakfast with Jeff Stelling, former player Andy Townsend encouraged Chelsea to consider bringing in Tottenham Hotspur full-back Djed Spence. Townsend remarked,

“I don’t know what he would cost because of how well he did at the World Cup.

“Has that inflated his price tag unreasonably? I genuinely haven’t got a clue.

“If Cucurella is going to Real Madrid for over £60million, I would have thought Djed Spence at £40million, something around that figure, would be a decent acquisition.

“It wouldn’t do them (Chelsea) any harm to have someone who is still looking to improve as a player, who is all ears and wants to get better.

“He is now showing what he is capable of, so that wouldn’t be a bad piece of business.”

Spence’s Impressive Form In North London

Spence had a strong season at Tottenham recently, serving as a crucial member of their squad. The England international made 30 league appearances last season but did not score or create any goals.

The 26-year-old stands out as one of the most skilled full-backs in the Premier League, suggesting that attracting him to Stamford Bridge this transfer window would benefit Chelsea.

His current contract with Tottenham extends until the summer of 2029, potentially complicating Chelsea’s attempts to sign him at a lower price this off-season.

Should Chelsea Boss Xabi Alonso Snap Spence Up This Summer?

Spence demonstrates solid tackling abilities and effectively reads danger, allowing him to make crucial interceptions. He tends to clear the ball when facing offensive threats and is capable of making powerful runs down the flanks.

Though primarily a right-back, he is also versatile enough to play as a left-back if required. However, he may need to enhance his goal-scoring and assisting stats to succeed at the highest level.

Spence would certainly enhance the defense under Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso, as he possesses the potential for regular first-team play at Stamford Bridge next season.

At 26 years old, Spence has his prime years ahead, aligning him well with the needs of the Premier League club this summer. Overall, Alonso would be prudent to heed Townsend’s advice and pursue the Tottenham full-back during this transfer window.

Speaking on talkSPORT Breakfast with Jeff Stelling, Andy Townsend urged his former club Chelsea to launch a move for Tottenham Hotspur full-back Djed Spence. Townsend said,

“I don’t know what he would cost because of how well he did at the World Cup.

Spence enjoyed a solid campaign at Tottenham recently as he managed to serve as an important member of their squad. The England international made 30 league appearances for Spurs last season but failed to score or create a goal for them.

The 26-year-old is currently among the most talented full-backs in the Premier League. Thus, the Blues would do well to lure him to Stamford Bridge in this transfer period.

His current deal at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium will run out in the summer of 2029, which could make it difficult for the Blues to sign him on the cheap this off-season.

Should Chelsea Boss Xabi Alonso Snap Spence Up This Summer?

Spence is a good tackler of the ball and can scan the danger well to make some crucial interceptions for his team inside his half. He usually puts his foot through the ball when the opposition are on the offensive and can make some driving runs out in the wide areas.

The English talent is primarily a right-back but can also serve as a left-back if told to do so. However, Spence needs to add more goals and assists to his game if he wants to taste success at the highest level.

Spence would undoubtedly improve the quality of Chelsea boss Xabi Alonso’s defence. He has what it takes to challenge for regular first-team football at Stamford Bridge next season.

At 26, Spence has his best years ahead of him, which makes him a good fit for the Premier League club’s needs this summer. All in all, Alonso would be wise to listen to Townsend’s advice by snapping the Tottenham full-back up in this transfer period.
