Liverpool Expected to Welcome Ronald Araujo as Defensive Concerns Mount

A Liverpool cult hero has confirmed that his international teammate is set to join the Reds.

The growing depth issue at centre-back is becoming a significant concern for Liverpool as they head into the new season under manager Andoni Iraola.

Virgil van Dijk remains the key figure in defense and is still seen as the cornerstone Liverpool can rely on when healthy. However, the situation behind him poses additional challenges.

Jeremy Jacquet joined the team with high expectations and looks poised to play a significant role in the future. Nonetheless, his absence from full training raises doubts about his readiness for the opening match against Newcastle United.

Joe Gomez finds himself struggling as well, having sustained an injury that ended his pre-season just eight minutes into his return. He is expected to miss the initial weeks of the campaign, further depleting Iraola’s options.

Giovanni Leoni is also sidelined as he continues to recover from an ACL injury, with a return not anticipated until September. This situation leaves Liverpool in a challenging spot before the season begins.

The stakes extend beyond mere numbers; experience also plays a critical role.

If Jacquet remains unavailable, Liverpool may need to depend heavily on a young and inexperienced player alongside Van Dijk. Mor Talla Ndiaye is well-regarded and has potential, but asking him to make his Premier League debut under such pressure could be overwhelming.

Ifeanyi Ndukwe also cannot offer another option due to issues with his work permit.

What appeared to be a position of reasonable depth has quickly become a noted weakness.

This is particularly concerning given that Iraola’s tactical style is unlikely to ease the burden on his defenders. His teams are anticipated to play with high intensity, defend vigorously, and often leave space behind, necessitating centre-backs who can manage expansive areas and handle pressure.

Liverpool thus needs more than just bodies; they require defenders who can genuinely compete for starting roles and provide Iraola the ability to rotate players throughout the season.

While there remains time for Richard Hughes to address this situation, it is increasingly pressing.

Liverpool cannot afford a season predicated on the hope that all players remain healthy. Van Dijk cannot single-handedly shoulder the defense, and younger players should be granted opportunities only when they are prepared, not due to a lack of alternatives.

Liverpool seems to be taking steps to remedy this dilemma, with Ronald Araujo expected to join the Reds this summer.

Though not yet officially confirmed, a cult hero and international teammate of Araujo, Darwin Nunez, has made the announcement.

He took to social media to welcome Araujo to Anfield, expressing: “I wish you the best in this great club, friend @RonaldAraujo_4 … I’m deeply glad that you can feel what the affection and support of the @LFC fans is like, they are special and they’re going to make you feel it that way, now you’re a red too, from afar always wishing you the best ¡VAMO ARRIBA!”

This method of confirming a transfer is signature Nunez, known for his emotional expressions.

Araujo is recognized as a comparable character, likely to win the fans over with his vibrant personality and experience, particularly given his versatility to play as both a centre-back and right-back.

With Nunez’s confirmation of Araujo’s impending arrival, official word from the club may be forthcoming.

Liverpool’s lack of depth at centre-back is becoming one of the biggest concerns of the summer, and it is a problem that Andoni Iraola really could have done without heading into his first season.

Virgil van Dijk remains the obvious leader at the back and, when fit, is still the defender Liverpool can build around. The problem is what comes after him.

Jeremy Jacquet was brought in with huge expectations and looks like a player Liverpool believe can become a major part of their future. But he has yet to return to full training, meaning there is now a genuine question over whether he will be ready for the opening game against Newcastle United.

Then there is Joe Gomez, who simply cannot seem to catch a break. His latest injury lasted just eight minutes before his pre-season was brought to an early end. He is expected to miss the opening weeks of the campaign, removing another experienced option from Iraola’s plans.

Giovanni Leoni is also unavailable as he continues his recovery from an ACL injury and is not expected back until September. That leaves Liverpool in an uncomfortable position before the season has even started.

The issue is not just about numbers, either. It is about experience.

If Jacquet is unavailable, Liverpool could find themselves relying heavily on a young and inexperienced option alongside Van Dijk. Mor Talla Ndiaye is clearly highly regarded and has plenty of potential, but asking him to make his Premier League debut in such difficult circumstances would be a huge responsibility.

Ifeanyi Ndukwe cannot currently provide another option either, with his work permit situation preventing him from playing.

Suddenly, what looked like an area with reasonable depth has become a serious weakness.

That is particularly concerning because Iraola’s style is unlikely to make life easier for his defenders. His teams are expected to play with intensity, defend aggressively and often leave space behind them. That requires centre-backs who are comfortable defending large areas and dealing with pressure.

Liverpool therefore need more than just bodies. They need defenders who can actually compete for starting places and give Iraola the flexibility to rotate throughout the season.

There is still time for Richard Hughes to address the situation, but this is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore.

Liverpool cannot afford to spend the season hoping everyone stays fit. Van Dijk cannot be expected to carry the defence, and the younger players should be introduced because they are ready, not because the club has run out of alternatives.

Thankfully, Liverpool are making moves to fix this and Ronald Araujo is expected to join the Reds this summer.

Well, he is expected but it’s pretty much looking guaranteed.

Liverpool have not yet confirmed Araujo’s arrival however a cult hero and international teammate of Araujo in Darwin Nunez has just done so.

He took to social media to send a message welcoming Araujo to Anfield. Nunez said the following:

“I wish you the best in this great club, friend @RonaldAraujo_4 … I’m deeply glad that you can feel what the affection and support of the @LFC fans is like, they are special and they’re going to make you feel it that way, now you’re a red too, from afar always wishing you the best ¡VAMO ARRIBA!”

This is one way to confirm a transfer, and it’s a typical Nunez style post and confirmation. Nunez wears his heart on his sleeve and he is full of emotion.

Araujo is known to be a similar type of character. The fans will love him and his experience will be much needed – especially because he can play as a centre-back and as a right-back.

Now that Nunez has confirmed Araujo is joining Liverpool, an official confirmation from the club can’t be far away.
