James Tilley Expects AFC Wimbledon to Improve This Season
Returning AFC Wimbledon winger James Tilley is optimistic as he anticipates the team will “push on” this season after narrowly avoiding relegation last year.
The 27-year-old joined earlier this week from League One rivals Wycombe Wanderers on a three-year deal for an undisclosed fee.

Tilley initially moved to Wycombe from Wimbledon in June 2025 after contributing to the London club’s promotion through the League Two play-off final. He later returned on loan for the second half of the 2025-26 season, aiding the Dons in maintaining their third-tier status.
“Everyone at the club now is looking to push on and do better than we did last season,” he stated during an interview with BBC Radio London.
“Obviously it’s going to be tough, because moving up a league means facing better players and larger clubs.”
“We know that we might be considered the underdogs in any game, but we believe we can compete with anyone when we perform at our best.”

Tilley’s first experience with Plough Lane began in 2023 when he signed with the Dons in League Two. He made 13 appearances during his loan last season and scored twice.
“In football, you find a team that truly feels like home, and for me, that’s Wimbledon,” he remarked. “My family and I are absolutely thrilled to be back.”
“Upon my initial signing, I learned about the club and its values—playing the Wimbledon way, highlighted by the speech from Ivor [Heller, the club’s co-founder].
“There are no individuals; we are always a collective. Everyone unites, including fans, players, and staff.”

Dons boss Jonnie Jackson described Tilley’s signing as one of his “top priorities this summer,” which Tilley found to be encouraging as a player.
“It gives you more confidence to feel wanted, and that’s when you play your best football, knowing you have full support behind you.”
“Our unity derives from having the right individuals in the club. Throughout promotion and after, we’ve always fought for one another on the pitch.”
