Tuchel Critiques England’s Big-Game Performance After World Cup Disappointment

Thomas Tuchel asserted that while England’s mentality could be bottled up and sold, their reliability in crucial matches remains questionable. The head coach expressed his frustrations during an interview following England’s World Cup quarter-final victory against Norway, where he was highly critical of England’s performance in the 2-1 victory.

Following a disheartening late collapse against Argentina, which resulted in England losing to Argentina in the subsequent semi-final, questions arose once again regarding England’s performance in high-stakes games. This defeat added to a series of near misses, including back-to-back Euro final losses and the 2018 World Cup semi-final defeat by Croatia, reinforcing the idea that England might be a “nearly” team.

While England showcased commendable effort and spirit throughout the tournament, these attributes were insufficient, marking yet another instance of disappointment in a campaign filled with them.

    Do England Lack All-Round Quality?

England’s World Cup run was bolstered by exceptional performances from captain Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham, who together scored 12 of England’s 14 goals—each netting six. Marcus Rashford and Anthony Gordon also contributed to the goal tally.

Tuchel faced challenges with Arsenal players Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka struggling with illnesses and injuries, which diminished his tactical options. Although John Stones remains a strong player at 32, the overall team seems solid but lacks the flair of top-performing teams.

England does not exhibit the high caliber throughout their lineup seen in Spanish or French teams and falls short of Argentina’s determination, significantly aided by Lionel Messi’s influence.

This deficiency led to a campaign marked by reliance on individual moments rather than consistent strong performances. Kane’s late goals saved them against DR Congo, and Bellingham emerged as the hero against Norway.

Despite Tuchel’s praise for England’s mentality, he did not hold back in criticizing their lack of quality.

England’s triumph in overcoming Mexico in a challenging match in Mexico City earned them credit, yet questions arise about their overall performance level.

In their opening group match against Croatia, they produced a noteworthy 30-minute spell, but other games, like the one against DR Congo, left them dangerously close to defeat.

Even with seasoned players like Rice and Elliot Anderson, Tuchel’s team has struggled to control games against stronger opponents.

Tuchel noted that ball possession “plays a crucial role”.

“It’s maybe not in our DNA like it is in the Spanish DNA or Argentinian or Brazilian DNA to take the ball, control the game and the ball, which is also a big problem,” he stated. “I still think we can show how good football players we are. I believe that capacity is present within the team, as demonstrated during training and camps.”

This struggle manifests when facing opponents they are not projected to defeat, evidenced by Croatia’s superior performance in the 2018 World Cup semi-final.

Though England may view it as unjust to be dubbed “flat-track bullies,” their record against top-tier teams in critical moments suggests a recurring vulnerability.

One critical statistic highlights their inability to control games: England held only 12% possession from taking the lead against Argentina until conceding the deciding goal in stoppage time.

Tuchel has structured his England team with a Premier League orientation—utilizing a back four, midfield depth with Rice and Elliot, Bellingham at ’10’, and two traditional wingers—but this approach may lack the necessary adaptability for elite-level World Cup competition.

While England possesses physicality and some skill, apart from Kane and Bellingham, they seem to lack the essential differences needed to sway critical matches in their favor.

Concerns linger for the Football Association as they seem to have exhausted all options.

Initially, Tuchel was seen as a transformative figure, meant to detach from Gareth Southgate’s previous conservative strategies that had led the team to two Euro finals and a World Cup semi-final.

He was expected to provide the difference between a narrative of misfortune and one of achievement.

Instead, leading a World Cup semi-final and appearing in control, Tuchel resorted to a tactical withdrawal reminiscent of those criticisms aimed at Southgate.

    Should Tuchel Be More Expansive?

Reaching the semi-finals was considered par for Tuchel’s England, but mediocrity will not secure significant accolades. Quality is essential.

His selections focused on pragmatism rather than prioritizing superior talent.

Trent Alexander-Arnold was omitted even before the squad announcement, while Cole Palmer and Phil Foden were left out following disappointing seasons. Morgan Gibbs-White, who excelled at Nottingham Forest, also did not make the cut.

At times, England could have benefited from the ball retention and game control skills of Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton, despite his limited international experience.

Tuchel must find a fresh approach, as the current strategies and player selections have consistently fallen short of expectations.
