Elliot Anderson Reveals Kevin De Bruyne as His Football Inspiration
Elliot Anderson has disclosed that he admired a Manchester City legend during his formative years. City has a rich history of legendary midfielders, including Colin Bell, David Silva, Yaya Touré, along with the steady presence of Rodri and Fernandinho.
Stepping into this prestigious legacy is a significant challenge, yet Anderson has seamlessly integrated himself into the team’s midfield as though he has always belonged there.
Since completing his notable summer transfer to work under Enzo Maresca, the 23-year-old has emerged as one of the team’s top performers, recently receiving a nomination for the Etihad Player of the Month award for October.
Having impressed the Manchester City fans with his determined and composed performances, the former Nottingham Forest midfielder has discussed the motivation driving his playing style.
In an interview with City’s official media for the November issue of the official club magazine, Anderson recounted how observing a fellow sky blue icon developed his insight into the game long before he first stepped onto the pitch at the Etihad Stadium.
While many young players idolize prolific forwards, Anderson concentrated on the nuances of midfield play once he understood his own role on the field, specifically citing the legendary playmaker Kevin De Bruyne as his most significant inspiration.
“As a kid, I guess you say Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo were idols for a lot of kids, but once I started to get an understanding of the game and the position I played it was always Kevin De Bruyne who I looked up to and wanted to be,” Anderson stated. “He was an amazing footballer, and that was the sort of player I always closely looked at. I always watched and really loved the way he played. It was just so satisfying to watch the way he passed the ball.”
De Bruyne’s emotional exit at the end of the 2024-25 season marked the conclusion of a remarkable decade at East Manchester, during which he accumulated six Premier League titles, a Champions League trophy, and numerous other club accolades.
Finding a worthy successor in the club’s next star midfielder has posed a significant challenge for Manchester City, but Anderson, despite his distinct style, stands out as a strong candidate.
The combination of the 23-year-old’s skill in controlling the game’s rhythm and his unexpectedly varied passing ability has garnered him praise during his initial months in Manchester.
While the complete array of summer signings has shown mixed results thus far, Anderson has distinguished himself as the most impressive of the new arrivals, and his prompt impact has been crucial as Manchester City navigates a demanding schedule this autumn, both in league and European competitions.
