Iconic German Coach to Step Down This Summer

Frank Schmidt to Step Down as Heidenheim Head Coach After 20 Years

After two decades at the helm, Frank Schmidt will leave his position as head coach of 1. FC Heidenheim at the conclusion of the current season. The club confirmed this decision in a statement on Tuesday evening, noting the 52-year-old’s choice not to renew his expiring contract.

Schmidt remarked on his discussions with club director Holger Sanwald, stating, “Holger Sanwald and I have had open and very close discussions on this subject repeatedly over the past few months, including during the recent international break. It was impressive to see how hard the club worked to secure another contract extension with me. In recent weeks, however, I have come to the conclusion that it is time to make a decision — also to give FCH certainty in planning for the future.”

He added, “That is why I told Holger Sanwald on Monday that I would not be extending my contract again, because after almost 20 years as head coach at FCH, I simply want to take a break this summer. How long that break will last and what life will hold for me from July 1 are not things I am thinking about right now — quite the opposite: I am not allowing myself to think about them until then.”

This announcement signifies the end of a notable chapter in German professional football, where Schmidt has made a lasting impact.
