Erik ten Hag Criticizes Cristiano Ronaldo Amid Man Utd Fallout

Headline: Erik ten Hag Criticizes Cristiano Ronaldo’s Performance Over Past Years

Erik ten Hag has once again criticized Cristiano Ronaldo, asserting that the former Manchester United player has not been able to “deliver” on the pitch for the last seven or eight years.

Since taking charge of United in April 2022, ten Hag has had a tumultuous relationship with Ronaldo. Following a slow start to the season, ten Hag benched the Portuguese superstar. In a subsequent match against Tottenham, Ronaldo refused to come on as a substitute and abruptly left the stadium, resulting in his temporary removal from the first-team squad for one match.

After making his way back into the squad, Ronaldo did not participate in the team’s next two matches before the Premier League paused for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. In November 2022, during an explosive interview with Piers Morgan, Ronaldo elaborated on the fractured relationship with ten Hag, a situation that ultimately led to the termination of his contract with Manchester United.

In a recent interview with The Athletic, ten Hag reiterated his claims of Ronaldo’s unprofessional behavior and expanded on his critical view of the player. He noted, “Every top team must embrace the top player, but the top player must also make way for the team. That was simply the problem with Ronaldo,” as reported by ESPN.

While recognizing Ronaldo as a tremendous player and one of the all-time greats, ten Hag stated the harsh reality: “For the last seven, eight years, he simply can no longer deliver. From Juventus onwards, it’s simply over.”

Ten Hag praised Real Madrid for knowing when to say goodbye to players at the right moment, asserting that they can recognize a decline in a player’s performance even when the player appears to maintain peak form to the outside world.

Furthermore, ten Hag explained that Ronaldo could no longer push himself to the level required to secure a starting position at Manchester United. “When I started at United, I explained how we were going to play and what his role would be, but ultimately, you also have to deliver yourself,” he stated.

The manager pointed out that Ronaldo struggled to maintain the necessary fitness levels to compete within the demanding standards of the Premier League or the Champions League. Ten Hag acknowledged the reputation Ronaldo has built around his fitness but emphasized that he could no longer meet those rigorous demands.

“That is the image,” ten Hag said about Ronaldo’s famed fitness. “But ultimately, he could no longer bring himself to do that. If you can’t do it, then the laws of the Premier League are merciless.”

In conclusion, he mentioned that when confronting Ronaldo about his performance issues, there was no dissent or criticism of his management skills, as the evidence supporting his claims was overwhelmingly clear.
