Southampton head coach Tonda Eckert has expressed admiration for midfielder Shea Charles in light of rumors surrounding his departure from the club.

Fulham have now agreed a deal valued at up to £30 million for the 22-year-old, who is set to become the most expensive Northern Irish footballer ever, pending a medical examination.

Charles joined Saints in 2023 and has made a total of 76 appearances for the club, scoring six goals.

On Saturday, he remained an unused substitute against Colchester United in the EFL Cup, where he was later seen applauding the fans in what appeared to be a farewell gesture.

“It’s no secret that some discussions have taken place,” Eckert told BBC Radio Solent.

“I can only emphasize that Shea has handled all the surrounding noise in a very professional manner, particularly considering his age. It’s not easy for a young player.

“His conduct has been exceptional, and I let him know that it’s quite rare, especially when you observe how others react in similar situations.

“He’s been remarkable in how he has conducted himself; let’s see what the coming days have in store.”

Last season, Charles particularly distinguished himself as a crucial player, marking all six of his goals, including several notable strikes.

Fans of Southampton will fondly remember his late winners against Leicester and Arsenal, as well as his stoppage-time goal against Middlesbrough in the second leg of their play-off semi-final, which initially seemed to secure a meeting at Wembley, only for the team to be banned from facing Hull City.

“It’s not a secret that there have been some conversations going on,” Eckert told BBC Radio Solent.

“The only thing that I can say is that Shea has been so professional with all of the noise around him, especially for a young player it’s not easy.

“His behaviour has been extraordinary and I told this to him that it’s not normal, especially if you look left and right how other players can react if there is some noise about them.

“He’s been extraordinary in the way that he’s presented himself and let’s see what the next days bring.”

Last season in particular saw Charles step up as a key member of the team, scoring all six of his Saints goals across the campaign, including some memorable strikes.

His late winners against Leicester and Arsenal will not be forgotten in a hurry by the Southampton fans.

Neither will his stoppage-time winner against Middlesbrough in the second leg of their play-off semi-final which at the time looked to have booked Saints a date at Wembley, only to be banned from facing Hull City.
