Falkirk Boosts McGlynn’s Strategy with Goals and Grit in Quick Ascent

Falkirk Secures Historic Win, Climbing to Third in Scottish Premiership

In a remarkable week for Falkirk, the team achieved a significant victory against defending champions Celtic and became the first to defeat Hearts at Tynecastle in 19 months, netting a total of seven goals across these matches.

Their recent success, highlighted by a 5-2 win in Edinburgh, marks the fifth consecutive triumph for John McGlynn’s squad, elevating them to third place in the Scottish Premiership standings. Just a month prior, a last-minute goal from Dundee had relegated Falkirk to 11th, barely a point above the league’s bottom position.

“We’re finding a balance; we’re not getting carried away but not downplaying our success either,” McGlynn conveyed to BBC Scotland. “Winning five games in a row shows we’ve got something special. We want this to continue because we’re enjoying it. However, with only 13 games played, we must remain grounded and appreciate our position in the league.”

The 64-year-old manager received widespread acclaim last season for leading Falkirk back to the top tier, securing a commendable sixth place following consecutive promotions. Players like Liam Henderson, who scored a spectacular fourth goal against Hearts, along with teammates Brad Spencer and Ethan Ross, have been integral to the team’s evolution since their days in League One.

“We’ve cultivated a strong team spirit and a commitment to support one another,” stated centre-back Henderson, acknowledging the transformative changes within the squad. “There’s now a clinical edge to our attacking play.”

Under McGlynn’s guidance, the team has made impressive strides, breaking records and rewriting history. Many observers noted that Falkirk no longer resembled the team of the previous year, given the considerable turnover of players over the summer. Notable departures included Calvin Miller to Hearts, Dylan Tait to Dundee United, and Barney Stewart, sold to West Bromwich Albion for a club-record fee after scoring ten goals from January to May.

In total, McGlynn brought in an impressive 17 new players, including the trio of Finley Barbrook, Owen Eames, and Jacob Murrell, who joined shortly after the season commenced. The 22-year-old Murrell earned the SPFL Player of the Month award for October, with his double at Tynecastle bringing his total to seven goals, tying him for top scorer in the division.

Former midfielder Michael Stewart praised Falkirk’s scouting abilities, saying, “They assess what type of player fits the team, ensuring a seamless integration upon arrival.” Additionally, Scott Allan, a former Hibs midfielder, highlighted Spencer’s leadership as pivotal. “He sets the standards needed for control, especially in the midfield.”

While the team has shown resilience and adaptability, McGlynn remains the driving force behind the squad’s success. “He is now a manager who is entirely secure in his role,” Stewart observed. “His growing confidence is shifting perceptions, and I wouldn’t dismiss the potential for him to be in contention for more prominent managerial roles in the future.”

For now, it appears that any departure from Falkirk would be seen as a step back in terms of league standing.
