Federico Valverde has been appointed as Real Madrid’s first captain this season, and the Uruguayan midfielder is embracing the additional responsibilities under new coach Jose Mourinho.

Following Real Madrid’s 2-1 victory over Ferencvaros at the Groupama Arena in Budapest, Valverde addressed the media, discussing several topics including Mourinho’s coaching style, the addition of Bernardo Silva, and Rodri’s decision to join Barcelona instead of Madrid.

“I didn’t expect Mourinho to be like this, in the few days I’ve spent with him. Very approachable. In the end, he’s someone who’s there with his personality,” Valverde commented.

“Sometimes he’s tough, but I think that’s the way you can improve. I like how he treats us, how he treats me,” he added.

Valverde also praised new signing Bernardo Silva, who made his debut against Ferencvaros. “Bernardo is a magical player, and very funny and entertaining,” he said.

“Spectacular. Honestly, I’m really enjoying him. He’s a magical player every day. He’s truly a spectacular person, excellent, who has fit in very well with the whole team,” Valverde noted. “He’s a fantastic player whom I’ve always admired, both as a rival and as a player. Having him with us today is a great joy,” he concluded.

On taking on the captaincy, Valverde shared his thoughts: “Yes, obviously. I’ve been acting as a sort of third or second captain for years now. And well, it’s a role I enjoy, one I feel very honoured and proud of.” He further emphasized the importance of creating a supportive atmosphere among teammates.

“I’ve learned a lot, and I try to present my best image in the locker room and on the field, so that all my teammates feel comfortable,” he explained. Valverde also mentioned that the team is progressing well under Mourinho’s guidance, aiming to implement the coach’s strategies despite missing several players.

“I try to make sure that every player in the locker room is happy, that they’re content, that they have good energy,” he concluded.
