Headline: Real Madrid’s Performance Rises Amid Vinicius Jr.’s Absence, Says Matthaus
Real Madrid has seen a notable rise in performance under Jose Mourinho in recent weeks, a change that coincides with Vinicius Jr.’s suspension. The Brazilian forward missed the recent 2-1 Clasico win against Barcelona and has two more La Liga games remaining on his suspension before making his return to the squad.
In an interview with German publication BILD, former Ballon d’Or winner Lothar Matthaus expressed concerns about Vinicius’s impact on the team. Matthaus stated, “I’m curious to see what Real Madrid will do with Vinicius Junior. The team functions better without him.” He went on to label Vinicius a “troublemaker,” asserting that his attitude is detrimental to the squad.
Matthaus criticized Vinicius’s public image, noting, “He is difficult, and he is not good for the team. His entire public image is damaging.” Furthermore, he expressed satisfaction with Vinicius’s 17th-place finish in the 2026 Ballon d’Or rankings, contrasting the Brazilian with Bayern Munich’s Harry Kane, whom he referred to as a gentleman.
Continuing his critique, Matthaus said, “The problem at Real Madrid is Vinicius Junior. When he isn’t there, the team functions better. They are more disciplined, everyone supports each other, and they are united.” He suggested that Vinicius’s presence contributes to a troubling atmosphere, marked by an “enormous ego” that negatively impacts both the team and the club.
Matthaus also urged Mourinho to take decisive action regarding Vinicius Jr. He stated, “I hope, for Real Madrid’s sake, that the president eventually takes action, either reprimanding him or having Mourinho leave him on the bench.”
While acknowledging the player’s lack of form recently, it is important to remember Vinicius’s significant contributions to the club, including pivotal moments in their last two Champions League victories. His explosive playstyle and match-changing capabilities are qualities that remain important to the team’s strategy.
As Mourinho continues to focus on enhancing his squad’s overall balance, how Vinicius responds after his suspension will be key to determining his future role in their campaign.
