Grêmio Aims for Tenth Copa do Brasil Final with Win Against Atlético Mineiro
In front of an enthusiastic crowd of 50,928 at a vibrant Arena, Grêmio moved a step closer to securing their tenth Copa do Brasil final. The Tricolor triumphed over Atlético Mineiro with a score of 2–0 on Sunday, thanks to goals from Carlos Vinícius and Noriega, along with an outstanding performance from goalkeeper Weverton. This match marked the first leg of the semi-final in the prestigious competition.
Weverton Shines in Dominant First Half
Atlético Mineiro had an early opportunity to take the lead, but Cuello failed to convert a close chance against Grêmio’s Weverton. The goalkeeper made an impactful play shortly after, as his goal kick turned into an assist for Carlos Vinícius, who capitalized on a defensive error by Lyanco to score in the 11th minute. Weverton received plenty of praise during the celebrations for his crucial role in the goal.
Despite Grêmio’s goal, Atlético dominated possession throughout the first half, controlling over 70% of the ball. However, Grêmio’s defense held strong, keeping the scoreline in their favor.
Noriega Extends Grêmio’s Lead as Atlético Pushes Forward
The second half saw a fantastic start for Grêmio, as they quickly doubled their lead with a goal from Noriega just two minutes in. In an effort to recover, Atlético Mineiro’s coach Barba Domínguez opted for a more aggressive game plan, even introducing young striker Cauã Soares to bolster their attacking threat.
As Atlético pushed hard for a comeback, the pressure intensified. Their best opportunity arose in the dying minutes of the match, when Vitor Hugo struck the crossbar. Shortly after, Gustavo Martins received a red card, reducing Grêmio to ten men. Despite this advantage, Atlético could not find the back of the net before the final whistle.
Looking Ahead: Return Leg Upcoming
The stage is set for the return leg next Saturday at the Arena MRV, with Grêmio able to advance even with a one-goal loss. Atlético Mineiro faces a tougher task, needing to win by three goals to progress outright, while a two-goal victory would lead the tie to penalties.
Both teams now redirect their focus to the Brasileirão, with Grêmio sitting in 15th place and facing league leaders Flamengo at the Maracanã. Atlético, currently seventh after two consecutive losses, will take on Botafogo, who are positioned 12th, at the Nilton Santos. Both matches are scheduled for next Wednesday.
