Manager Mikel Arteta expressed his excitement about the signing of Bruno Guimaraes, stating that the new midfielder will “ignite something different” in the Arsenal squad, and hinted at further summer transfer moves.

Guimaraes’ arrival for £75m from Newcastle United was officially announced on Saturday, and the 28-year-old midfielder was presented to the fans at Emirates Stadium ahead of Sunday’s match against Borussia Dortmund.

Although Guimaraes was not part of the squad for the 3-2 loss to Dortmund, he is expected to participate in the upcoming match against Como on Wednesday.

Arteta explained his strong desire to bring the Brazilian to the club.

“I think he describes himself as a warrior,” said Arteta. “I think he’s a warrior with tremendous quality, intuition, leadership, and charisma that will help us and ignite something different in the team.”

“I’m delighted to have him. We clearly see the energy he brought immediately to the training ground – the hunger and desire to create a big history at the club. That’s the ambition we need.”

“We want to go to the next level and are very much convinced that we’ll need players with such personality, desire, and character to push everybody inside the organization to go even higher.”

The acquisition of Guimaraes expands Arteta’s options in midfield, which now includes Declan Rice, Martin Odegaard, Martin Zubimendi, Myles Lewis-Skelly, Ethan Nwaneri, Eberechi Eze, and Mikel Merino.

Arteta detailed what Guimaraes can contribute to the Arsenal side this season in their quest to defend the Premier League title.

“On the pitch, he offers versatility to play in two different positions based on our strategy or the opponent’s play,” he explained. “He’s capable of winning the ball back and progressing the game very quickly.”

“He’s a player who is comfortable playing through the lines and moving into space. He is also a goal threat with great timing to get into the box and finish the play.”

Arsenal had previously completed the signing of Christos Tzolis from Club Brugge and brought in goalkeeper Illan Meslier on a free transfer.

The Gunners pursued Real Madrid winger Vinicius Jr, but the player opted to sign a new six-year contract to remain in Spain. Nonetheless, Arteta made it clear that Arsenal aims to pursue further ambitious signings in the transfer market.

“Well, that’s what we’re trying to do. If we find the right player in the market to strengthen the squad, we are looking forward to that,” he said.

Arteta also noted that Jurrien Timber remains “weeks away” from returning to fitness, while fellow defender William Saliba continues to recuperate from a back injury.

And Arteta went into detail about what he hopes Guimaraes can bring to the Arsenal side this season as they look to defend their Premier League title.

“A player which obviously has tremendous timing and intuition to win the ball back and progress play very, very fast.

“He’s a player that is very comfortable putting people through, moving between the lines, moving in behind.

“And then he’s a goal threat. He’s got a smell and a really good timing to get in the box. And he has the capacity to finish the actions.”
