Barcelona’s Hansi Flick Commends Defensive Strength After 3-0 Win Over Aston Villa
Barcelona manager Hansi Flick expressed admiration for his team’s defensive performance following their 3-0 victory over Aston Villa in the UEFA Champions League. He also shared updates regarding Rodri, Frenkie de Jong, and Marc Bernal.
During his post-match press conference, Flick underscored the significance of defensive organization, collective responsibility, and the contributions from his younger players.
However, Rodri’s recent muscular discomfort and Raphinha’s emotional state were also prominent topics, as Barcelona now shifts focus to their LaLiga match against Atlético Madrid on Sunday.
Flick Praises Barcelona’s Defensive Organisation
Flick highlighted the effectiveness of Barcelona’s defense as a cohesive unit during the match against a formidable Aston Villa team.
He expressed satisfaction with the defensive lineup and goalkeeper Joan Garcia, particularly noting the development of younger players on the squad.
Hansi Flick praised Joan Garcia’s performance, stating, “It was really important that we defended together as a unit today, staying compact. The back line performed incredibly well. Joan Garcia did too. If you look at their age and how the young players have performed… it makes me happy.”
He further elaborated on the victory, mentioning, “We played against a very good side, and we wanted to put them under pressure. What’s also important is how we defended and the confidence we showed with and without the ball.”
Flick also recognized the collective effort that led to the clean sheet, adding, “It was important; they’re a great side. We defended well, and we’re happy with what we saw in defence. Everyone gave their all to keep a clean sheet. We’re pleased with the victory.”
Rodri Injury Concern and Midfield Updates
Rodri’s substitution at half-time raised concerns about his fitness.

Rodri felt muscular discomfort, which leaves his participation in the upcoming Atlético Madrid match uncertain. Flick explained, “He’s felt a niggle in his muscles, and we’ll have to wait until tomorrow.”
He also noted the significance of having Frenkie de Jong return, although he acknowledged that De Jong is not yet at full fitness.
Flick affirmed, “It’s very important to have him back. He might not be 100 percent yet, but he’s performing at a good level. We’re taking it step by step. He’s an excellent player. We were looking for quality players in every position. With him, we’ve got one or two positions very well covered.”
Addressing Marc Bernal’s performances as well as his midfield options, Flick stated, “Frenkie’s just come back from injury; he played as a centre-back against Alavés, and Bernal has played very well whenever he’s been on the pitch.”
Flick Discusses Raphinha’s Situation Before Atlético Test

Raphinha was on the scoresheet in the match against Aston Villa.
Flick acknowledged that events in Tenerife had affected the Brazilian player emotionally. He expressed condolences regarding the situation and clarified the rationale behind Raphinha’s substitution.
Flick stated, “What happened in Tenerife has affected him. It’s affected us all. My condolences to the family, the club, friends… to everyone. It’s a tragedy. And it’s affected him. He wasn’t upset about being substituted. That’s all I can say. You have to be there and stick to the plan. We’re all human. It’s affected him.”
The Barcelona squad faces limited recovery time ahead of their match against Atlético Madrid. Flick emphasized managing the team effectively, stating, “We’ve got four days to recover.”
