Jersey Bulls manager Elliot Powell stated that his team “got away with it” after staging a comeback to defeat Sheerwater FC 4-1 in their FA Cup preliminary round match on Saturday.

The Bulls fell behind early, conceding a goal just 12 minutes into the match during a first half filled with mistakes and miscommunication.

However, the team regained their composure, with summer signing Sammy Henia-Kamau netting a hat-trick, while Lorne Bickley capped off a well-executed team move.

Despite the victory, Powell expressed his dissatisfaction with the team’s overall performance. “For 25 minutes we were poor, but then we had a bit of individual quality which got us ahead in the game,” he shared during an interview on BBC Radio Jersey.

“The second half was much, much better, and more like us, but we can’t afford to play like we did in the first 25 minutes in the league.”

Powell also reiterated the club’s ambition to reach the first round proper of the FA Cup.

“I thought we were unlucky last year to lose out to a professional side, but our ambition has got to be to go one further,” he commented.

“Everyone’s dream is to get to the first round proper and to be playing at one of those big grounds, like at Sheffield Wednesday or Leicester.

“So, that is our ambition, and we’ll have a good go at it, but the league is still the priority.”

Currently, the Jersey Bulls hold the sixth position in the Isthmian League South Central Division.
