Scotland Defender Kirsty Smith Signs Two-Year Deal with Rangers

Rangers have confirmed Scotland international Kirsty Smith has returned to her home country, signing a two-year contract ahead of the 2026/27 season.

The experienced defender returns to Scotland following an eight-year stint playing in England. Smith joins the Rangers squad after her contract expired at Nottingham Forest, where she played during the 2025/26 campaign. Previously, she represented both Manchester United and West Ham.

This move marks Smith’s return to Scottish football for the first time since she left Hibernian in 2018. Since her departure, she has established herself as one of Scotland’s most experienced defenders, both at the club level and on the international stage.

Kirsty Smith joins Rangers after a successful spell in England

Before moving south, Smith progressed through the youth ranks at Hibs. There, she enjoyed a successful period that included winning several domestic trophies and gaining Champions League experience. Throughout her eight years in England, Smith competed in both the Women’s Super League and the Women’s Championship.

In addition to her club career, Smith has earned more than 60 senior international caps, making her one of the most experienced members of the Scotland squad.

She now joins Rangers with a wealth of experience as head coach Leanne Crichton continues to strengthen the team for the upcoming campaign.

Kirsty Smith reacts after joining Rangers

Speaking after finalizing the move, Smith expressed her excitement about returning home and starting a new chapter with the Glasgow club.

“It’s nice to be home. I’ve spent eight years down in England and really enjoyed it, but Rangers is such a massive club. As soon as I heard there was interest, it was something I wanted to be part of.”

The defender also revealed that the club’s high ambitions were a primary factor in her decision to sign.

“You always want to be competing for trophies and that’s exactly what Rangers are aiming to do. I’m looking forward to getting started, meeting everyone and hopefully helping the team have a successful season.”

What Kirsty Smith will bring to Rangers

Smith brings versatility, leadership, and a high level of experience to Rangers. Because she is comfortable across the back line, the Scotland international can fill a number of defensive positions, providing the squad with vital depth ahead of a demanding season.

Her background in England’s top divisions, paired with years of international competition, will provide valuable guidance within the locker room.

Head coach Crichton welcomed the signing, noting Smith’s quality and the experience she adds as the club continues to build a roster capable of challenging for domestic honours.

As Rangers prepare to compete at the top of the Scottish Women’s Premier League, the arrival of Smith stands as a significant addition before the new season begins.
