Barcelona Eyes Racing Santander’s Jorge Salinas Amid Ongoing Negotiations
Barcelona has not secured any defensive reinforcements this summer, but the club is monitoring potential candidates. One player on their radar is Racing Santander’s Jorge Salinas, although formal talks have yet to yield results.
The Catalan club aimed to finalize the transfer before July 1, stating that Salinas’ release clause was €8 million, as Racing had not yet been officially promoted to La Liga.
However, Racing, now a promoted side, has maintained a steadfast demand for the €16 million release clause, leaving the two clubs apart in negotiations.
Racing Refuses to Lower Asking Price
Regarding Salinas’ situation, Racing sporting director Chema Aragon has stated that the player will only depart if a club activates his €16 million release clause, according to Mundo Deportivo.
Barcelona still shows interest in Salinas, currently offering around €6 million, which is significantly less than Racing’s stance.
Aragon acknowledged that it would be challenging for Racing to retain the star player if a larger club pays his clause but emphasized the club’s desire to keep one of their promising young talents.
“We want our best players to stay,” he remarked, noting that “there is little you can do if a giant comes along and pays the clause.”
Salinas Praised for Professionalism
Despite the transfer speculation, Aragon commended Salinas for his exemplary professionalism.
He described the young defender’s behavior as “exemplary,” highlighting that Salinas returned to pre-season in top shape and has not attempted to force a transfer.
Additionally, Racing is ready to offer the player an improved contract if he stays beyond the transfer window.
“If he stays, we’ll have to recognize his growth in his contract as well,” Aragon added.
Barcelona Faces Difficult Decision
Salinas’ dual capability as a left-back and central defender makes him a sought-after target for Barcelona, especially given the club’s strategy to recruit young players with versatile skill sets.
However, there is a significant gap between Racing’s €16 million demand and Barcelona’s reported €6 million offer, making it difficult for the two clubs to reach an agreement.
Should Barcelona wish to secure the Under-19 Euros champion, they will need to significantly enhance their offer for Racing to reconsider.
Although Salinas is not a top priority for Barcelona this summer, he represents a promising investment for the future.
It now falls to Deco to determine how to facilitate a deal and persuade Racing to part with Salinas in the weeks to come.
