Barcelona Midfielder Brian Farinas Nears Permanent Move to Girona
Barça Atletic’s failure to earn promotion from the fourth division last season has forced the club to make difficult decisions regarding the futures of several players.
Many young prospects who featured in Juliano Belletti’s reserve squad last season have outgrown the division and now require competitive experience at a higher level with a different club.
This situation has led to several departures, and the latest player set to exit is Brian Farinas. The 20-year-old is nearing a move from Barcelona to Girona.
The club expects the operation to be a permanent transfer rather than a loan. According to Mundo Deportivo, the parties could complete the deal for approximately €1.5 million, with Barcelona retaining 50 percent of the player’s rights.
Earlier today, it was reported that Girona had not yet finalized an agreement with their Catalan rivals, despite mutual interest.
However, recent updates suggest negotiations have advanced, and the La Masia talent could soon be announced as a new Girona player.
Farinas ready for a higher level
Barcelona believe Farinas needs more game-time at a higher level.
Farinas enjoyed a productive campaign under Juliano Belletti at Barça Atletic, where he recorded five goals and seven assists across 33 appearances.
He also trained with Hansi Flick’s first team on occasion, but the path to regular senior minutes remains crowded.
A move to Girona offers him the chance to play in the Segunda Division, which provides a clear step up from the Segunda Federacion.
After establishing himself with the reserves, the midfielder now requires a more demanding weekly environment to continue his development.
Barcelona protect their investment
The reported structure offers a logical path for Barça.
Receiving €1.5 million provides an immediate financial return, while retaining 50% of his rights ensures the club benefits if Farinas flourishes and secures a future transfer.
Barcelona can buy Farinas back for cheap.
Barcelona have adopted a smarter approach when managing La Masia departures. While not every player can reach the first team—especially in a crowded midfield—allowing talent to leave without protection can prove costly if the player succeeds elsewhere.
Farinas remains under contract until 2028 and has been with the club since his arrival from Villarreal in 2018.
The club views his exit as a strategic development decision. Girona offers senior responsibility, competitive minutes, and a familiar Catalan environment.
For Farinas, that combination currently outweighs waiting for occasional first-team opportunities at Barcelona.
The deal awaits final sign-off, but the move appears imminent.
