Liverpool Might Target PSG Defender Ilya Zabarnyi, Says David Lynch

Liverpool’s ongoing need for defensive reinforcements has emerged as a key storyline in this summer’s transfer window. In a recent episode of the Media Matters podcast from Anfield Index, host Dave Davis questioned reporter David Lynch about one noteworthy player, PSG defender Ilya Zabarnyi, who continues to attract interest.

With manager Andoni Iraola openly acknowledging Liverpool’s defensive shortcomings, speculation around potential signings has ramped up. While Lynch did not indicate that a deal is imminent, he provided insights suggesting that Zabarnyi could be a player to keep an eye on as the transfer window unfolds.

    Connections Fuel Liverpool’s Interest

When Davis brought up links between Liverpool and the Ukrainian international, Lynch cautioned against raising expectations too high.

“Yes. So definitely someone to kind of at least keep an eye on. I’d say, you know, Richard Hughes bought him for Bournemouth. Obviously Iraola worked with him and absolutely loved him as well.”

These existing connections clarify why Zabarnyi’s name has surfaced in discussions. Hughes is familiar with the player from his time at Bournemouth, while Iraola has previously coached him and clearly holds him in high regard.

However, Lynch emphasized that any potential move hinges significantly on PSG’s transfer activities.

“And there’s a suggestion PSG will be open to a sale. But there’s, I mean, how many ifs are there? Like it’s crazy really.”

This caution is noteworthy. Rather than framing Zabarnyi as Liverpool’s next signing, Lynch outlined a scenario requiring several conditions to align before any meaningful developments could occur.

    PSG’s Role in the Move

Lynch noted that any potential transfer would largely depend on PSG’s plans.

“It’s just one I wouldn’t be surprised if there was a move there for him kind of later in the window if PSG really want to shove him out the door, but we’re not at that point yet.”

This perspective reflects the current dynamics. While Liverpool may admire Zabarnyi, admiration does not equate to a completed transfer. Factors like availability, timing, and valuation all play crucial roles.

Lynch also articulated why Zabarnyi remains appealing from Liverpool’s standpoint.

“So just a name that I think is worth throwing out there. He’s someone that is clearly liked by the recruitment staff at Liverpool, clearly liked by the manager, has Premier League experience, good age, might be available, but that’s up to PSG.”

These qualities resonate with a Liverpool squad aiming to bolster its ranks without taking on unnecessary risks. Premier League experience, familiarity with Iraola’s coaching style, and support from Liverpool’s recruitment team are all advantageous factors.

    A Player to Watch

In a later segment, Davis inquired whether there were any solid defensive targets for Liverpool fans to think about beyond the well-publicized pursuit of Bradley Barcola.

Lynch’s response highlighted the uncertainty currently surrounding the market.

“Honestly, I can’t think of a single link that I think has got genuine 100% legs at the moment.”

Yet despite this uncertainty, Zabarnyi remained a focal point for Lynch.

“That’s why I kind of think with Zabarnyi, there’s just a lot of boxes ticked by him.”

    He succinctly summarized Liverpool’s position.

“So I’m like, I just think he’s worth keeping an eye on. So let’s kind of watch that one really. That’s an interesting name.”

For now, Liverpool’s interest seems to center around monitoring Zabarnyi’s situation closely, with no current indications of negotiations or an imminent agreement. Nevertheless, Lynch’s comments highlight a player aligning well with Liverpool’s recruitment strategy, one that may emerge as a viable option if conditions at PSG evolve.

As the transfer window continues, supporters may need to exercise patience while following this intriguing potential acquisition.
