Headline: Andoni Iraola Champions Changes at Liverpool, Promises Opportunities for Young Talent

Andoni Iraola has already significantly transformed Liverpool.

Upon joining the Anfield club, the Spaniard understood the extensive changes required.

However, he likely didn’t expect the true level of unfitness among his players.

It was widely acknowledged that Arne Slot‘s training sessions lacked intensity, and honestly, it didn’t seem to matter who performed well, as he consistently opted for the same players.

This scenario has placed players like Curtis Jones on the brink of leaving Anfield, alongside the departures of Jarell Quansah and Tyler Morton both exited last summer.

However, with Iraola now leading the team, significant changes are underway, particularly following the latest developments from Anfield.

Trey Nyoni Set for Regular Role in Liverpool’s Starting XI

Last season, Liverpool’s midfield consistently underperformed.

The team struggled to win battles in the center of the field, as Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis Mac Allister both struggled to deliver.

While it appears both players will remain at the club this summer, the potential exit of Curtis Jones could be on his way out poses additional challenges for the Reds.

Nevertheless, according to a recent update from The Athletic, Liverpool has a strategy to navigate these issues.

“The early indications show that midfielder Trey Nyoni, 19, is poised to take advantage of the club’s 2026 pre-season, coming as no surprise since Liverpool previously paid just under £1m to acquire him from Leicester City as a 16-year-old,” they reported.

“Liverpool rejected several loan requests for Nyoni in the winter window earlier this year, yet he saw minimal playing time (eight substitute appearances, the first as late as the 82nd minute), leading many to believe he might seek first-team minutes elsewhere this summer.

However, after impressing new head coach Andoni Iraola, who has expressed his desire to keep Nyoni, the young talent could be on the brink of a more prominent role, which is encouraging to note.”

Andoni Iraola Provides Fresh Hope for Liverpool’s Revival

While Slot may have secured the Premier League title for Liverpool, it became evident that he was not the ideal long-term solution.

During the 2024-25 season, the Dutchman benefitted from managing Jurgen Klopp‘s well-assembled team, renowned as one of the finest globally.

The underwhelming performances from Manchester City and Arsenal also aided his efforts.

Last season, Slot’s weaknesses were laid bare, especially during Liverpool’s struggles, as he rarely utilized substitutes or academy players.

This led to a belief among players that there was no pathway to the first team, prompting them to look for opportunities elsewhere.

With Iraola now at the helm, it’s clear he intends to offer genuine chances to younger players.

Luke Chambers, Nyoni, Kieran Morrison, and Lewis Koumas are all candidates to make an impact this season, but of the four, Nyoni appears poised for the most significant opportunity to shine.

Andoni Iraola has already massively changed things at Liverpool.

Before joining the Anfield outfit, the Spaniard knew that he was going to have to make a lot of changes.

However, he probably didn’t anticipate just how unfit his players actually are.

Everyone knew that Arne Slot‘s training sessions were laid back and, if we’re being honest, it clearly didn’t matter whether anyone did well or not as he always chose to use the same players.

That’s why Curtis Jones could now be on his way out of Anfield and why Jarell Quansah and Tyler Morton both exited last summer.

However, now that Iraola is at the helm, things are clearly about to change, especially after the latest news to emerge from Anfield.

Trey Nyoni is going to be handed a regular role in Liverpool’s starting XI

Last season, Liverpool’s midfield let them down more than once.

The Anfield outfit never won any battles in the middle of the pitch with Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis Mac Allister both massively underperforming.

Indeed, both players look likely to stay in L4 this summer but, since Curtis Jones could be on his way out, the Reds are going to have even more problems on their hands.

However, as per a fresh update from The Athletic, Liverpool seem to have a bit of a trick up their sleeve to help them out.

“The early indications are that midfielder Trey Nyoni, 19, is the big winner from the club’s 2026 pre-season, not that his development will come as a great surprise given Liverpool, after a tribunal, paid an initial transfer fee of just under £1m to sign him from Leicester City as a 16-year-old,” they wrote.

“Liverpool turned down multiple loan requests for Nyoni in the winter window at the start of this year but then hardly used him (eight substitute appearances, the earliest in the 82nd minute) and the expectation was that he would seek first-team opportunities elsewhere this summer.

“However, after impressing new head coach Andoni Iraola, who has already made it clear that he wants him to stick around, Nyoni may be on the verge of a bigger role, which is refreshing to see.”

Andoni Iraola is exactly what Liverpool needed to get back to their best

Although Slot may have delivered the Premier League title back to Anfield, he was clearly not the right man for the job long-term.

During the 2024-25 season, the Dutchman had the privilege of using Jurgen Klopp‘s team which he had carefully curated to become one of the best in the world.

The fact that Manchester City and Arsenal both failed to meet expectations also helped him out massively.

Slot’s shortcomings were exposed last term and, even when Liverpool were massively struggling, he still rarely ever turned to his bench, let alone the academy.

This led most players to believe that there was no longer a pathway for them into Liverpool’s first-team squad which forced them to seek pastures new.

However, with Iraola now at the helm, it’s clear that he’s ready to give some of the youngster’s a proper go.

Luke Chambers, Nyoni, Kieran Morrison and Lewis Koumas are all contenders to make their mark this season but, of the four, it feels like Nyoni is going to have the biggest chance to impress.
